VintageTemple Farm Lipizzans--1969 Presidential Inaugural Parade for Richard Nixon

Conversano Duba, ridden by Peter Szalla; Pluto Ancona, ridden by Adolf Athenstaedt; and Favory Farsang, ridden by Wolfgang May

When I was honored by a meeting with President Richard Nixon in 1984 at the then Meadowland's Arena, I brought up the subject of his inaugural parade and the Lipizzan horses as I had always thought it was a big deal. He looked at me blankly and said "you must have been mistaken. I had to bite my tongue to keep from replying, "Geez, your shitting me, right?" In one of my rare, rare moment's of diplomacy I instead said, "Maybe I was mistaken"(although there wasn't much chance of that) and the conversation turned to the New Jersey Devils and the playoffs against the New York Rangers.

For Bruce The Clown

Look up "classic, one of a kind" in the dictionary. These two should be the shining example of that phrase. Truly will never be another. God Bless them both.

For Birgit/Simba

Mark has spent over 35 years caring for the animals at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, IL. He counts elephants and lions among his close friends and has been involved in preserving the zoo's rich history.
His zoo career began at the Children's Zoo and over the years he learned his profession as an animal keeper, zoologist, assistant curator and curator of mammals. He ended his long association with animals holding the endowed chair as the Abra Prentice Wilken Curator. Presently, Mark holds the title of Curator Emeritus.
Mark has authored 2 children's books, and over 50 scientific and numerous popular articles. The University of Illinois Press has published his book on the history of the Lincoln Park Zoo entitled Ark In The Park.
Over the years he has taught zoo management in the People's Republic of China, Guatemala, Japan and Mexico. His travels have taken him to Africa leading tours to Uganda, Botswana, South Africa, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Kenya. He has also escorted animals to and from Lincoln Park Zoo. Lions coming from the Kapama Game Reserve in South Africa, Spectacled bears going to a zoo in Venezuela or bringing a family of gorillas to Disney's Animal Kingdom were all part of the job.
Presently he is working on a unique project with the Pittsburgh Zoo to record on video the animal stories of retired zoo and aquarium directors for future generations of historians and zoo professionals.

I just received this email and link above from my friend Mark Rosenthal:

For all of you who might have an interest or know of someone who might have an interest...I started a blog talking about the many, many zoo stories from Lincoln Park...this blog stuff is all new to me but I am trying to figure it out as I go...

Let me know your thoughts...I know I have a lot to figure out...it is indeed a work in progress

Birgit, this is the person who could probably answer all of you question's about the Lincoln Park Zoo Polar Bears. I am grateful Mark has decided to take on the awesome task of manning a blog. The knowledge and insight he has to share on zoo keeping and Lincoln Park Zoo will be immeasurable. There is a great story on his blog about Pat Sass long time Great Ape Supervisor at LPZ. A day spent sitting around the campfire with Pat Sass and Carmen Hall listening to them talk "monkey" was indeed a day not to be forgotten.

For Allen Pogue--This is "liberty" horse training

It takes a skill beyond most people's comprehension to put a group of horse's in a situation where if anything is done wrong, they can "rabbit" on a moment's notice.

I would think this would be an extremely difficult maneuver to complete properly while mounted side saddle. Amazing!!!

Luna Park--1906

John Milton, could this "maze" of ring's have been the inspiration for the famed "horse carousels?"

Tommy Bentley--Kelly Miller Circus 1950's

Does anyone know who that is mounted on the pinto behind Tommy? It's not Clancey is it? :) Just kidding folk's. As horrible as a gaping mouth is(see photo below) a tie down on a high school horse is even more of a travesty to the art.

I sure hate to see a gaping mouth in a high school horse. That kind of resistance/avoidance should have been trained out of this horse before it was presented to the public.

I don't know if that is a "creative" halter on the Llama or if the donkey had beaten the soup out of him!!!

Dianne Olds Rossi and Roman

In my opinion, one of the finest long line horse's I have ever had the pleasure of watching is Roman. The "carousel" production that he and Madame Col. do is the finest I have ever witnessed. Although Fire Magic "Chewy" is the star of Dianne's stable, if you appreciate the art of long lining, Roman and Dianne are not to be missed.

FIRE MAGIC TO BE BREYER HORSE!
