John Milton, could this "maze" of ring's have been the inspiration for the famed "horse carousels?"

A Blog designed for discussion of topics related to, but not limited to, Circus, Zoos, Animal Training, and Animal Welfare/Husbandry. Sometimes opening up the dialog is the best starting point of all. And if for nothing else when people who agree and don't agree, get together and start discussing it, it will open up a lot of peoples minds. Debate and discussion even amongst themselves opens a window where there wasn't one before.

There were mechanical rides, "carousels" if you will, which had several, opposite turning platforms, some at different levels, others with a menagerie of animals and elegant chariots. They can be found in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It's likely that these were inspired by pre-existing horse and rider maneuvers, either military, royal entertainment or something else that were well known for their splendor and thus imitated.
Anonymous,
That's a good point, and I never looked at it that way before. I always just assumed the opposite, that the opposite turning carousels inspired the "carousel" in the ring.
