Not Many Outlaw's Left, And DAC Set The Outlaw Standard. 73 Years Old And This Cat is Still Rocking

David Allan Coe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"I Hate Love" written by David Allan Coe. Recorded by David Allan Coe, Waylon Jennings and WIllie Nelson on David Allan Coe's 1986 album "Son of the South"

David Allan Coe, Merle Haggard, Jack Ingram, Billy Joe Shaver and Toby Keith  2010.  It's hard to imagine it getting any better then that.

I love this where David say's "they just thought I was some long haired hippy or something."  :)   When David came to see me in Houston Texas where the Ringling Show was playing and he was doing a show later at Gilley's in neighboring Pasadena, he arrived announced with his band.   I had no idea he was there until the Ringmaster came to my dressing room where I was getting ready for the show.  He said,  "There is some guy here to see you, but security won't let him in, and I really don't think this is someone you want to see anyway."   I asked who it was, and the Ringmaster said,  "I don't know, but he is a "long haired hippy" looking guy with peacock tail earrings, beard down to his stomach, tattoo's from his neck down to his hands, and huge diamond and turquoise ring's on every finger.  There are 5 other guy's with him that look just as bad."  I laughed and said,  "Geez, that's my friend David.   Tell security to let them in, and get me 6 box seat tickets, please.   After the show, every security guard at the Summit's jaw hit the floor when the 7 of us climbed into a white stretch limousine, and headed out to Gilley's for David's concert.    That was in 1985, and 27 year's later my mate is still mistaken for "a long haired hippy!!!!!"  LOL

KING OF AQUARIA sez: My redneck neighbor used to blast his tape of David Allan Coe while he was washing his pickup truck. A black couple - the best of neigbors - lived across the street. One particular song by Coe got a lot of play in my neighborhood: "To think I kissed the lips that (oops)him off makes me want to quiver . . ."

Greg,
Those were two albums that David recorded, more as a lark then anything. I listened to one song off of the albums, years ago and never paid notice to them again. Just not my deal. But as you are aware there is a segment of society that relishes in that sort of thing. The albums have become "cultishly" famous, so much so that David often remorse's that his biggest regret for doing the albums, is that he fear's they may be all he is remembered for, and his truly great skill's as a singer/songwriter forgotten. I told him when I first met him that if he only had one regret in life, that if he had only done one thing in life that he wished he hadn't, he was truly a lucky man indeed.

This link, below you can take with a grain of salt, as you would take a statement by a "HUGE" circus fan about animals or a person, as you will note it was corrected by a "HUGE" David Allan Coe Fan:

Wade, not only is your website a treasure trove of information and memorabilia about the world's greatest and most beloved entertainment venue but you also enlightened me about singer David Allan Coe in the bio you provided. If I had not read that, I, too would have gone through life thinking he was no more than the recording he had made 'on a lark'.

King,
Yes, DAC did do two "bad" albums, but there is a bit more to the story:

As an Animal Trainer, David's words in his first letter to me(no text messages, cell phones or internet back then), spoke volumes about the man's character: "I had a chance to buy a leopard and a tiger but I couldn't devote the time to them I would have need to." Half the nitwits in the world with exotic cat's never took that wise thought into consideration.
