Monkey Island was originally built as a WPA project in 1936. It was rehabilitated in 1950. It is surrounded by a moat that also houses some aquatic birds in the summer. The moat is drained in the winter and the monkeys are housed in the Monkey House which was the original primate exhibit at the zoo.
