Vintage Lincoln Park Bear Pit's

Why do you suppose the metal was added under the overhang bar? To soften and hide the "old hook" bear pit look of the exhibit's?

Dr. Lester Fisher. LPZ had a big male polar bear named Mike that could easily reach the top of the enclosure.

Have a look here
http://die-k-files.blogspot.com/2011/08/mike-marshmallows-more-teeth-lessein.html

I was in the middle of finishing my post about Mike, his liking for marshmallows and the dentist visit in 1967 when I stumbled over your magnificent posts about LPZ history. Some of the pics I had found myself during the last months, some not, and so I am only too happy to get a clearer picture of the time when Mike was at LPZ. I had also found the photos, but in minor quality, about the Skazka escape in a police report. I will cover it too.

I hope you don"t mind that I have used 2 of the photos from your post. I have linked to your site which is so often a real treasure for what I want to thank you.

I am still wondering if you know more details of Mike and Skazka concerning their backgrounds. As to Mike I found at least that he came 1958 from Alaska, but I don't know for how long he lived.

Simba,
Welcome to circusnospin. I too have looked at your fine blog on numerous occasions. You had some pictures posted a while back depicting a model of the enclosure for Knut that I would like to post here at some point.
How about it Jim or RJR. Any additional information about Mike or Skazka for Simba?

Wade

Thanks for your welcoming message, Wade. I am sorry, I have missed to put my name under my comment, Simba was my dog whom I featured in various little stories including Knut himself, the wolves and other bears of Zoo Berlin on Knut's first rbb blog, until she decided -:)- that we had to have our own blog as my hard disks were flooding over with collected photos, stories etc about Knut, other polar bears, dogs, wolves etc...Unfortunately Simba died only 8 days after Thomas Dörflein had died, the keeper of Knut, and I couldn't bring myself to change our blog profile and accounts. So, just for the records, it's me, Birgit, who carries on with the K-files which have continued as Knut's Outpost in the Indian Ocean also even after Knut's tragical death in March. Indian Ocean because I am living in the middle of it.

Feel free to use any material which I have posted, just bear in mind, that as most of the photos are not taken by myself, it might be necessary to link to the original source. In case you need more infos on a topic, you are also welcome to contact me directly.

As to the photo of Knut's enclosure, I am a little bit at a loss which one you mean.

Thanks also for giving it a try to find out more about Mike and Skazka.

Have a nice Sunday

Birgit
