Hagenbeck Revisted

Just found these 3 postcards on ebay Germany and thought they might be of
interest to you and the rest of the blog gang.
The first two pictures are from the Hagenbeck Voelkerschau, showing an Indian
scene (duh) on the one and a group of "Samo Jeden" (1911) on the other one.
Interestingly the seller states that the the picture of the Indian group is from
GUSTAV HAGENBECK´S GRĂ–SSTE INDISCHE VĂ–LKERSCHAU DER WELT (Gustav Hagenbeck's
Greatest Indian Voelkerschau of the world) while the other one is from
Hagenbeck's Tierpark in Hamburg. I have never heard of a Gustav Hagenbeck so it
might either be a mistake on the seller's side, someone who used the Hagenbeck
name for his business or a, to me at least unknown, relative.

The third postcard is from 1932 and shows the elephants "Roma" with baby
"Minjak" (Minyak) - born 19. 1. 1932 . According to the seller's info Minjak was
the oldest elephant born in captivity. Born in 1932 at Circus Hagenebck
(apparently on tour in Essen) and died 1986 at Ringling Brothers and Barnum &
Bailey.

I read on www.elephant.se that Minjak/Minyak seemed to have come with Hugo
Schmitt from Hagenbeck in 1947.

Marco,
I seem to recall Axel having a Minyak in the early 80's, but I don't recall her dying. But I do recall Targa(another Hugo elephant) dying suddenly in Providence, R.I. in, I think 1985.

Minyak came to USA in 1947 with Hugo Schmitt. She was already dead when I arrived on Ringling in 1978. Iki my lead elephant was the last remaining one from the five that came over in 1947. Iki was wild caught in Sri Lanka in 1932 or 1933 and died in late summer of 1980. Iki can be seen in the GSOE movie doing hind leg walk during elephant act.
