For all you "Zoo Freaks" like me. The Barlett Society

Dear All

The replacement zoohistory.co.uk website is progressing well.

We are working towards a Spring launch.

The current debate concerns the photo section so image suggestions are welcome.

1) War Memorials

Mark says: -

"I have images of the keeper war memorials at London Zoo and Belle Vue
Zoo which I can include with a list of the missing staff and links on
where more to research them, part of my research into wartime zoos and
botanic gardens for a forthcoming book. You are very welcome to have
these for the zoo history website.

There is a sampler of this material on the November and December 2010
blog posts for http://worldwarzoogardener1939.wordpress.com

If any members know of or come across other war memorials in British,
European and Worldwide zoos and botanic gardens I would be interested
to hear of or see photos of these at mark.norris@newquayzoo.org.uk I
already have material about Chester and ZSL."

Hullo all: The term 'War memorial' caught my attention. I do not mean to be a non-paid press agent for a publisher, but would like to mention that for the first time (at least in English) the history of zoo animal killings during WWII has been ably told in the following book by Ms. Mayumi Itoh. Familiar names such as Herman R. and Paul M. have helped her. Its focus in Japan but Europe, as well as USA, are included. Regards, Ken
Japanese Wartime Zoo Policy: The Silent Victims of World War II, 2010, Palgrave MacMillan, New York

2) Bristol Zoo (6. March 2011)

A meeting of the Independent Zoo Enthusiasts Society and the
pre-launch of the "Illustrated History of Bristol Zoo" by A Ashby, C
Schwitzer & T Brown.

3) Edinburgh Zoo

Baldur says: -

"I recently moved to Edinburgh to study for my Master’s in Ecotourism.
Having lived in Iceland for much of my life, away from the zoo world,
I now enjoy having a local zoo for the first time and have already
become a member of the RZSS. I also look forward to visit other zoos
in the UK and Ireland in due course. I would welcome any opportunity
to meet up and tour Edinburgh Zoo together with those who would find
themselves up here in the north, as chances for me to socialise with
fellow zoo enthusiasts have been few and far between in the past. I
would furthermore be pleased if you could keep me in mind if you plan
to visit Highland Wildlife Park and/or Blair Drummond; as not having a
car makes it very hard to visit HWP (four hours each way on a bus,
leaving only three hours to see the park) and certainly impossible to
visit Blair Drummond."

4) Zoohistorica 2011 (2. September – 4. September 2011)

Herman says: -

"At the 20th Zoohistorica in Mulhouse in 2009, we voted to accept
invitations of the Leipzig Zoological Garden and the Halle Zoological
Garden to hold our 22nd annual collectors’ meeting for the second time
in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. Last year in Landau we confirmed the
venue and set the date for the first weekend of September. The
highlight of the zoo year will be the inauguration of Leipzig Zoo’s
spectacular new tropical house, Gondwanaland."

I would personal recommend both the collection and the event.

I already know of a dozen hoping to travel from the UK including a
couple of potential first timers.

Cheers, Paul M.
