Miss Fancy--Vintage Birmingham Zoo--Birmingham, Alabama

Miss Fancy was purchased by the Birmingham Advertising Club from a stranded circus. It lived, along with some wolves and parrots and various other exotic animals in Avondale Park before the city of Birmingham built a permanent zoological garden at Lane Park. Though usually docile, Miss Fancy did cause a death on one of the keeper's drunken forays downtown on her back.

The Great Depression took away the Birmingham zoo that had existed entering the 1930s.

In November 1934, all its animals were purchased by the new Adkins and Terrell Cole Bros Circus that debuted in 1935.

The zoo's elephant went to the new circus. Perhaps it was this animal, though press reports called her "Bamma."
