A Peaceful Protest

A herd of rare White Park cattle are set to make a fortune for their eccentric owner by turning into the most unusual advertising medium ever invented.

Millionaire baronet Sir Ben Slade of historic Maunsel House has stepped in to help promote a nearby fun attraction after his neighbour had a serious beef with local planning regulations. Sir Ben plans to clothe his livestock in branded cow-rugs to spread local advertising messages and announcements despite fears that local councillors had shut the gate on motorway-side adverts.

Gerry Cottle, Sir Ben’s neighbour, has had temporary signs announcing forthcoming events at Wookey Hole Caves declared against the spirit of the law by the local authority, and has been prosecuted and fined.

“It’s a load of bull” declared the former circus-magnate and present owner of the cream of Europe’s prehistoric caverns, which stretch for thousands of metres beneath the Somerset hills. “Of course we have no intention of doing anything unnatural to the countryside: we abhor eye-sores. That’s why it’s so exciting that Sir Ben has come up with the perfect solution.” explains Mr Cottle. “Everyone loves to look at the flora and fauna as they drive about. Now they can see the rare herd AND get a tip on what to do!”

Sir Ben’s White Park cattle, a breed which goes back to pre-Roman times and is even said to feature in cave-paintings, are being dressed in colourful Wookey Hole rugs, as they roam the Somerset levels and the foothills of the Mendips nearby.

Sir Ben is adamant this is an excellent solution, and insists the county planning types stay away…

“With rates for beef and milk at their lowest ever thanks to threats from Foot & Mouth, supermarket policies, and the health lobby all wading in, why shouldn’t I put my 200-strong herd into the media fray and have them compete with Clear Channel and ITV? Most of them are a lot more attractive than Dale Winton, anyway.”

This fabulous very decorative breed wanders the parks at Woodlands Castle & Maunsel House. They can also be seen at the national trust properties of Crooks peak and Brean down.
