A Blog designed for discussion of topics related to, but not limited to, Circus, Zoos, Animal Training, and Animal Welfare/Husbandry. Sometimes opening up the dialog is the best starting point of all. And if for nothing else when people who agree and don't agree, get together and start discussing it, it will open up a lot of peoples minds. Debate and discussion even amongst themselves opens a window where there wasn't one before.

I have been watching a documentary series called "Zoo Days" on the Pet Network. It's all about the Chester Zoo in England. In one episode one of the keepers was talking about one of their herd of Asian elephants named Sheba. He said that she is 50 years old and that he has known her since 1976. (They seem to have a lot of baby elephants.) The strange thing is that he did'nt even mention that Sheba gave birth to the only African X Asian htbrid elephant in history. That was Motty and he is mounted in the British Museum now. They were also talking about the Komodo dragons which were born there from a female which had never been mated. One of them, a baby male, has terrible arthritis. I thought that when a female lizard reproduced without being bred (I forget the technical term for this parthenogenesis or aaaparthenogenesis maybe?) the babies were all clones of the mother, as with the whip taled lizard, which is an all female species. The females have to breed with each other to induce ovulation. I guess the Komodo dragon with arthritis could be a male clone of the mother. I heard of a hammerhead shark which in a tank with no male also reproduced. That was in the aquarium at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha.
My dad had "Vance" from the late 70's to late 80's before selling him to Mike. It was a hard decision to let him go, my dad made the mistake of falling in love with him. Which can be dangerous, because it can cloud you from making the rite decision. He was a good boy and always put in a good days work, but a full grown male that goes into musth has no place giving elephant rides thru out the country side. "Vance" in my opinion is the best looking male elephant in North America.
Mike,
You are dead on about two things. Vance is a beautiful elephant, and a male can make you do stupid things.
