There is a training method in the discipline of reining called fencing where you canter parallel to the fence and turn the horse into it, teaching him to rock back on his haunches. It is also used to initiate a sliding stop, by cantering him up to the fence and stopping, again teaching him to use his haunches. Is he possibly fencing this horse to initiate a leg yield or a piaffe?
