A Blog designed for discussion of topics related to, but not limited to, Circus, Zoos, Animal Training, and Animal Welfare/Husbandry. Sometimes opening up the dialog is the best starting point of all. And if for nothing else when people who agree and don't agree, get together and start discussing it, it will open up a lot of peoples minds. Debate and discussion even amongst themselves opens a window where there wasn't one before.

This is why "cute names" are not allowed into an intelligent conversation. There is a lot of sadness in the world. I get a lot of these, and am asked why can't we post anonymous. I have posted this so everybody understands.

How about that? They do the ride.As Tommy Hanneford exclaimed the God damned ride becomes more important than the act. Wonder how Franco handles that with his pockets full from Swiss franc ride money. Surely alot more than those cheap uncles paid him as an elephant trainer, when he did not have the scratch to keep Princess Stephanie 9in the style to witch she was accostumed, evan with those shady bastards on the take.
Yes, they do the ride, but with some style. They don't under the big top and not in connection with the show schedule, not even in the intermission, nor before or after the show.
The rides at Knie's are done only in the morning (or some afternoons) for the visitors of the menagerie, that is in a separate area from the circus, with a separate ticket.
If you remarks, on the platform side a sort of giant clock is displayed, to indicate the times of the rides.
For the Swiss families, the elephant ride visiting Knie's travelling zoo on Sunday mornings, have been a traditions by at least a century.
Another tradition, is that the menagerie tickets include to freely go under the big top to attend the morning rehearsals of the Knie family preparing the acts for the following season: horses, exotics, elephants and cats (when they used to have), noting of the training is hidden to the audience.
I've spent some of the most exciting mornings of my life admiring the work of Mr.Fredy senior with his horses and of Louis with the tigers or elephants.
The same have always been done also at Alexis Gruss's in France and on the Togni circuses in Italy.
Raffaele,
There you hit on the most glaring difference, that I have found between the European and American Circus, "with some style." Not the people necessarily, because we have had some of them here who were suspect in recent times, but the Cirque as a whole.
On of my most cherished memories will always be watching Ms. Sembach-Krone or Jana Mandana practicing horses in the AM. If you ask some American Trainers, that practicing for the public is a new innovation that they have recently come up with.
Ignore "Ol Redneck bullhand", we suspect who it is. Who rants with misspelled words? But also appreciated why "cute name" and anonymous are not allowed if it is an intelligent conversation.

Ok,
but please don' think that all European show are masters of style.
Certainly the fact to have one-ring operations, some week-long stands, day offs and short trips helps in having care of their business and of the audience.
But in the last couple of decades, hundreds of European small-time families are grown with larger big tops, larger menageries but unfortunately not having circuses and shows can could have "some style". And this also concern animal presentation and care.
Everybody, for being son of some whealthy circus owner, becomes a master in animal training and presentation.
When we are speaking of Knie, Krone, the two Gruss, the Togni, Bouglione, Orfei-Nones, and Casartelli we are talking of exceptions: those names being the very top of worldwide standards in the industry, especially in the field of animals (those names having in common at least 4 generations of ring aristocracy).
But besides thems there are hundreds (some of them more than acceptable, of course).
Raffaele,
You of course are correct, and if I had referenced names, they would have been the names you mention. There are a number of "ragbag" shows in Europe, often times made more then what they are by a Fans Association Day. Now we are back to the "pity" of putting everything under an umbrella title of "Cirque" or "Circus". It gives garbage validity and brilliance a bad name.
Now Raffie, how to we fix that injustice? By encouraging the public, not the fans to go see "Monte Carlo Best 0 the Best acts/artists" and letting them decide? What if they decide and don't come back? Give them the Best 0 the Best Polish Festival acts/artists next year, and hope they will buy that? Or do we admit it is junk, and quite playing "friends of mine", and encourage new blood to enter as they see a brilliant, wonderful future ahead. The names you mention are, assuredly exceptions. Has anybody every really looked at how much brilliance in the past and today, was not born in it, but walked in of the streets?
