Detroit Zoo--Detroit, Michigan--2005

Least we assume there is not room for improvement each and every day, and that every change is for the worse, the picture above is of Barle and her cub Talini. Barle is one of the bears "seized" from the Suarez Circus a few years ago, and you may recall those were pretty famous circus bears, before they went South. This is the tundra side of the exhibit, and below is the pack ice side. Pictures courtesy of Mary Ann Howell, and I am assuming Joe Howell took the photos.

Wade, you are correct, the photo was taken by Joe. The big claim to fame of the Detroit Zoo is that they have the world's largest and supposedly best polar bear exhibit. It was the AZA exhibit winner in 2003, the year it opened. I have previously mentioned other AZA exhibit winners, Big Cat Falls at Philadelphia, and Louisiana Swamp at Audubon, New Orleans. In every case where we have seen an AZA exhibit winner, I can understand why it was awarded. Go Wings!

I often wondered how the Suarez family suddenly came up with a big group of polar bears when it was almost impossible to buy them at the time. I know they came from Manitoba, but how did they pull off such a huge purchase?
