A Blog designed for discussion of topics related to, but not limited to, Circus, Zoos, Animal Training, and Animal Welfare/Husbandry. Sometimes opening up the dialog is the best starting point of all. And if for nothing else when people who agree and don't agree, get together and start discussing it, it will open up a lot of peoples minds. Debate and discussion even amongst themselves opens a window where there wasn't one before.

Wade,
I believe it is electric cable,we used it in Perth in the early 1990's and it is used today at Dubbo and it held an African male, with small tusks and most recently an Asian bull with a large tusk on one side.
Cheers
Glenn
Glenn,
Mate, that coiled wire across the top isn't electric. No, need to electrify it. It's razor wire of the deadliest kind. Concertina is the finest of it's kind and is used in state of the art prison systems, including our very own Gitmo.

I know razor wire is used at Blackpool and at Whipsnade for the zoo's perimeter fencing in places so maybe that is Dublin's perimeter.I know a bloke that would know.
Cheers ay

Glenn,
Possibly it is perimeter fencing, but regardless it sure give's an "unfriendly" feel to a place. When it is that close to an exhibit it takes away a lot of the "naturalness" that zoo's spend a fortune to allude to, much like building a massive big natural no bar's/moated exhibit and then filling it with boomer ball's, beer kegs, Tupperware enrichment or the classic a "Mogul Palace."

I just got conformation from some one there. The razor coil is on a gate 6ft back from elephant yard. It's to keep ele-fanatics like Radar from scaling the gate to get up close and personal with the beasts. I agree, it give unnatural look, but with guys like Radar wondering the planet, one can never try TOO HARD to protect themselves and their steeds...
I have only scaled a gate once! Well, twice.. maybe three times. But more often than not I end up having a few drinks or conversation with who I was looking for in the first place.
Casey,
Regardless for a few dollar's more you would think they could have come up with something more suitable for their "natural movement." Akin to buy a Mercedes, and then washing it with a cheap brush with leaves scratches on the surface, because you couldn't afford a high dollar brush after making the car purchase.
