What is this?

This photo was sent with the question, "what kind of pedestal is this?" I really don't know, except to think, that it is a way to keep the lion up there, or to stop him from going off, or grabbing something sitting beside him. Looks like a training issue with him. Does anyone have any other idea's or information?

I bet if we could see what is to the right of the lion, we could know for sure what it is...

Designer training aid? Made designer when training was given up on?

Anonymous,
Ingenious idea!!!!! Are you kidding me? If this is the best your imagination will let you come up with, the training profession is in real trouble.

Jules Jacot use to do a "Crowning of the King of Beasts" in his big act at the St Louis Zoo in the 40s and early 50s. Jules would place a cape and crown on the lion and he's sit-up. Jules would snap his whip and all the females would roar, according to Johnny Herriott -- quite a show. The throne idea just might be.

Wade,

Here is what I was referring to-I assume it was created for the Monte Carlo show this past winter. You'll notice the new white lionesses, Princess and Diamond are very close to him on the back right at the beginning-maybe the idea for the netting on the side of his pedestal?

Aesthetics and concepts in circus props have always been an embarrassing trouble.

Raffaele,
As if the new movement in "motorcycle's as props" can get anymore embarrassing, along comes something like this. The "infamous" fold up Hawthorn prop may have been bad, but it was at least an effort at a pyramid. Thing's like this are just goofy.

Wade

The Hawthorn fold-up prop I consider one of the highest efforts in contribution to the utopia of theatrical cleanliness supposed to reign in an immaculate round arena.

Raffaele,
What the f**k did you just say???? It almost sounded like you were suggesting the "erector set" prop was a thing of beauty. That's nut's. It was not a thing of beauty by any stretch.

I didn't said was a thing of beauty, but an effort.
I just loved the concept, I agree it was not at the best of his potential.
The way the idea was best exploited (and probably Hawtorn's first inspiration) was in the 70's by Russian acts like Bugrimova, where the fold-ups were elegantly contained into the ring surface.

Whell, nothing beats Louis Knie's Baumann-inspired props arrangement and staging in the cage.
