A Blog designed for discussion of topics related to, but not limited to, Circus, Zoos, Animal Training, and Animal Welfare/Husbandry. Sometimes opening up the dialog is the best starting point of all. And if for nothing else when people who agree and don't agree, get together and start discussing it, it will open up a lot of peoples minds. Debate and discussion even amongst themselves opens a window where there wasn't one before.

Wade, I don't know who you think it is, but he looks pretty good to me.

Thomas,
You are absolutely correct. You may not believe this, but I used to look that good also. We all did. Flavio and my generation of Animal Trainers were very competitive and skilled. For my money one of the most exciting time's to be an animal trainer in the circus. So many truly gifted, talented folks. In America the fire started by Clyde Beatty was reignited by Charly Baumann, and GGW pored gasoline on the blaze. Not much left but smoldering ashes.

I saw the picture before so i saw fast is was Flavio. I saw Flavio working for the first time in 2003 in Belgium with his impressive elphant act. In 2004 I saw him in Paris. Later I also saw him in Italy a few times and 1 more time in Paris. I also saw his elephant act presented by Suppmeier in 2007 and by Montez in 2008. It are the best elephant acts you can found in Europe now. The rhino/panther act of Flavio did you ever saw it work ?
Thomas
Thomas,
Yes, I saw the rhino and leopard act. It wasn't much, but then none of them ever are. I have always loved his horse acts, and the quality of horse's used, and admired his elephant act and also his sister, Christina.
Wade
I thought already it wasn't very much. Yes his horse acts are amazing. At Herman Renz and at Arlette Gruss their are now 2 of his horse acts. Christina's horse act was in 2007 at Arlette gruss presented by Linda Gruss. Later Suppmeier presented it at Heilbronn. Flavio trained a new camel/horse act for Festival di Circo de Latina, I loved that act, you can found it back on youtube and also his horse acts at latino festival and his elephant act at Monte Carlo in 2006.

Wade: What you said applies to the whole business. In the era we have lived through,,,, "we saw the best of it"
wade -- i loved the way you described the beatty-baumann-ggw trio. three superstars in their own right, each completely different from the other two, each one of a kind. but you're too modest. you didn't mention the fourth. you were the last animal training superstar we had. like the other three, you were great as well, with your own style.
bill -- you hit the nail on the head. we saw the best in every field -- and lived to see a time when the also-rans would be the best if compared to most of today's best.
i don't want to end negatively -- we had filler acts back in the day, but you couldn't buy swinging laddders at walmart and have an act by midnight. i think a few good acts like we took for granted in our day could bring the circus days we knew and loved
Billy,
I don't go back much further then the Jimmy Troys, the Pete Luvas Duo, the Flying Armors, the Quasars, etc. to name a few of the greats. So yea, I gotta agree with you also. It was the "whole era", I won't be convinced there was ever any greater.
It was a hell of a ride, was it not my friend.
Wade
Henry,
Thank you for the kind words. You were there for the important part of the ride, the Ringling years, and know possibly more then many others the respect and admiration I felt for those men. Heady company to be mentioned with and I am humbled(it does happen occasionally, Casey)
