Tom Bass--Great vintage memorabilia

New Years greeting from Mr. Tom Bass, three and five
gaited saddlehorse trainer and creator of the Bass
bit. He trained and sold show horses to Teddy Roosevelt,
William Taft, and "Buffalo Bill" Cody among others.
He rode High School in the inaugural parades for Grover
Cleveland and Calvin Coolidge and was invited to perform
in Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. He trained the
famed Saddlebred sire "Rex McDonald 833" as well as 18
other World Champions and High School horses.

"This folks is a great example of advancing and improving
an industry, by changing for the better, and upgrading
the standard. The Saddlebred above
which was the standard of the day in 1916, today would not
even be able to compete in the ring against other
Saddlebreds,as they are so much better. Most Arabian
English horses are better today then this Saddlebred
Champion of old. That drive to do better and to improve
what was done yesterday, is what keeps most animal
industries at the front and ahead of the times.
Great picture of a great Horseman/Trainer.

Are any of you "elephant men" from across the wet bit
familiar with Joey Ratliff and his work with the elephants
at the Audubon Institute? It's pretty impressive, and
right now he is assisting with a study of heat
retention/dissipation in elephants that will be monumental
in understanding husbandry protocol for cold climate
housed pachyderms.
