White Buffalo at Bronx Zoo???

Am I doing a Mary Ann and imagining a "white animal" or do I need stronger glasses? I have never read of a reference to a White Buffalo in any of the extensive Bronx Zoo literature. I don't know the year of this photo, but looking at the physical shape this animal is in, maybe it didn't live long which maybe the reason why there is no mention of it. I can't imagine it not being in the Hall of Heads and Horns.

I'm sure that's a white buffalo. What else could it be? Zoos keep lousy records. The Bronx Zoo has no record or Rewati the white tiger living there.

Paul,
Bronx has traditionally had that skewed idea of what is "ethical" and what is not. Example, disavow any knowledge of Rewati, but keep the elephant rides going.
This photo appears to be back before they had ethical debates with themselves, and I find it strange that it was not at least mentioned by one of the authors of the multitude of books written.

Never saw any reference to a white buffalo when I worked at Bronx and spent days off wading through old archives in the park. Worth remembering, Hornaday was one of the founders behind American Bison Society -- certainly one of the first efforts to manage animals scattered across America as a single population. Wondering if this animal might have belonged at an ABS member and was housed temporarily at the zoo?

Still without internet here in Missouri. Glad libraries still let me logon!

Ben,
Hornaday was indeed well ahead of his time. What Zoo Directors used to be before they got "commercial."
