Cincinnati Zoos historic Bear Pits

Last time I was at the Cincinnati Zoo the Bear Pits were closed off to the public for refurbishment. Did they do a great job, and what if any types of animals are kept in them today. I hope not dead ones, like Martha.

Wade, by Martha I'm sure that you mean the last passenger pigeon. What a sad history of a species. The bears currently in the bear grottoes are black bears, spectacled bears, and polar bears. Was it during the renovations to the polar bear exhibit that you were there? What year was that?

Mary Ann,
Indeed the story of Martha is sad, as is the passing of any species. When I was young the county used to pay a bounty of .05 for ground squirrel tails, and .25 for prairie dog tails. My brother and I, in our best buffalo hunter, get the hump and leave the rest style, attempted to replicate the deed. Luckily they stopped the practice. It was in 1985, and there was nothing in the Pits. Mammal Curator Steve Romo brought a gang to the show each year to see Tony.
