A Blog designed for discussion of topics related to, but not limited to, Circus, Zoos, Animal Training, and Animal Welfare/Husbandry. Sometimes opening up the dialog is the best starting point of all. And if for nothing else when people who agree and don't agree, get together and start discussing it, it will open up a lot of peoples minds. Debate and discussion even amongst themselves opens a window where there wasn't one before.

Wade, Cincinnati's elephant house has also been redone, preserving the exterior of the historic building. We saw it last year when it was under construction, and it even has bull quarters. Their bull returned from where he had been on loan.

Mary Ann,
Cincinnati did a great job with the redoing of their feline house, although I think the got a little "over creative" with the jungle look.
Wade
Wade, are you referring to the murals on the walls of the small cat exhibits in the Cat House?
Mary Ann
Mary Ann,
That is exactly what I am referring to.
Wade
Wade, when were you there? Did you see Big Cat Canyon? To me, it is the most beautiful big cat exhibit I have ever seen, with all the foliage, and the surrounding deck/boardwalk. They also have the traditional moated tiger grottoes.

On vacation a few months ago we were given a tour of the barn and saw their cows and their bull Sabu. It's a nice barn, quite a few stalls and a nice ERD. The entire barn is designed for Protected contact. Hopefully they will have another birth, as Sabu has sired two calves. Sadly, both have died of the EEHV.
Ryan,
Where did they get Sabu do you know. Gunther Gebel Williams had a young Asian male name Sabu.
Wade
Wade,
I believe the Sabu you are talking about was born at Portland. This Sabu was imported to the Cincinnati Zoo and then loaned to the Louisville Zoo when he became more of a "handful". After the death of Onyx in Springfield, Sabu was brought in to be their breeding bull. He was transferred back to Cincinnati Zoo last November. Sadly, his daughter Nisha died the next month.
Ryan,
When you say "imported" do you mean brought into this country, or brought from another zoo?
Wade
Wade,
The Sabu that GGW had was born at the Portland Zoo and is still in the RBBB organization.
I would only be guessing that the Cincinnati Zoo Sabu is the same one that was there from 1991 until 1998 then to Louisville and then the Dickerson Park Zoo.
He was born in Malaysia, which is apparent by his stature and how much hair he has. I saw him most when I knew the head elephant keeper at Dickerson Park Zoo. I do not know of anywhere else he was between Malaysia and his first seven years at Cincy.
Bob and Ryan,
I thought GGW's Sabu was still with Ringling. Was Cincinnati's Sabu imported, and in what year?
Wade
That Sabu still is. This Sabu (Cincy's) was imported in January 1991, three years old. He is six years younger than Gunther's Sabu. Speaking of which, has RBBB's Sabu sired any calves.
RBBB's Sabu has not that I am aware of.
Bob
