A Blog designed for discussion of topics related to, but not limited to, Circus, Zoos, Animal Training, and Animal Welfare/Husbandry. Sometimes opening up the dialog is the best starting point of all. And if for nothing else when people who agree and don't agree, get together and start discussing it, it will open up a lot of peoples minds. Debate and discussion even amongst themselves opens a window where there wasn't one before.

Floyd Smith about 1965. Show didn't change much. Alice, Pumie, Yrudy, Clara, and Marie were the remains of the eight babies August Busch brought for the Zoo in 1954 and the act debuted in 1955. My guess was that Director Vierheller wanted his own Besalou baby elephant act and talked Augie Busch into buying the animals. From several people I heard Floyd was quite happy to keep his old act of four. Floyd wasn't eager to take on a new chalenge. In the four seasons I saw the show he never added a trick or even changed the music. He was an interesting guy, sometimes very admirable, sometimes an old grump. He retired in the winter of 1969-70 and died soon after.
Thanks Jim
