A Blog designed for discussion of topics related to, but not limited to, Circus, Zoos, Animal Training, and Animal Welfare/Husbandry. Sometimes opening up the dialog is the best starting point of all. And if for nothing else when people who agree and don't agree, get together and start discussing it, it will open up a lot of peoples minds. Debate and discussion even amongst themselves opens a window where there wasn't one before.

This is a dead female elephant after having been strangled by ropes pulled on each side of the car by teams of horses.
There is another view of the incident showing the ropes being pulled taut with the elephant still standing.
This took place at the first under canvas stand of the 1910 season. That was at Danville, IL on April 28th. While being unloaded that morning, 9 elephants stampeded doing much damage to local property. The one executed was said to be the leader. The surviving 8 “offenders” were sent back to Baraboo for “training.” I have never been able to determine the name of the one executed nor the names of the 8 others. News items used monikers that do not fit with the Woodcock lists.
Ringling was having serious elephant management problems at the time. In 1909 there were three runaways. Elephant superintendent William Emery was new to the job that year, having replaced the veteran Pearl Souder. Emery lasted through the 1911 season after which he was replaced by George “Deafy” Denman who had the bulls on the 1910 and 1911 Forepaugh-Sells shows. He would become RBBB’s long running elephant supt.
RJR,
Thank you for that history. I can sure count on you to come through.
I hope you are feeling well, and best wishes,
Wade
