Yes, elk, imagine a hooved animal trying to maintain it's balance going up train ramps. I bet they lost quite a few to leg breaks back then, never mind antlers getting stuck in bars. I wonder if they were there just because they were dirt cheap to replace as needed.

Now that you have gotten that out of your system, no, I don't think that was the reason. If it was there are a number of antlered hoof stock which could have been gotten much cheaper then elk.
