Goliath the Elephant Sea--1934 Hamburg to Basel Road Trip

In the photo above taken in 1929, at Hagenbeck's Tierpark it look's like a different keeper from the photo below, date unknown, also taken at Hagenbeck's. Is it Emil Warnecke? Goliath was with the Ringling show in 1928 with a keeper named Emil Warnecke(type Goliath Hagenbeck in the search bar on the top left) who went back to Hamburg with him. The gentleman below looks like the gentleman in the clip taken at Basel in 1938. Is that the case? In August 1938 Goliath(or is this a "different" Goliath) was sent from Hamburg to the Basel Zoo and a month later in September he went back to Hamburg. Prof. Reynolds, why did Hagenbeck send Goliath(if it was "Goliath" as it looks younger then the 1929 Goliath above) to Basel? As an "attraction/drawing card" for Basel, or was there another reason? One month seems a short time for the effort it must have taken to load him, transport him, and then bring him back. Goliath and how they "hauled" him around "back in the day," is to me one of the most incredible stories in the annuals of captive animal husbandry. How in the world did they manage not to kill him quickly?

Hagenbeck Circus--1926

I have reposted this clip from yesterday, suggested at being the 1930's, with the above photo from 1926 of Circus Hagenbeck in Berlin. The chap in the clip looks like the chap in the photo above, who appears to he a chain-smoker. Does anybody have any idea what his name and Nationality is?

Kenya sees rise in elephant population despite poaching

Elephant population in the expansive Tsavo ecosystem in the south of the country rose to 12,572 from 11,696 three years ago according to the preliminary results of a census released Saturday.

The figures, which represent an increase of around two percent, is however less than the four percent rise that has been recorded in previous counts.

"This has happened in the backdrop of a very bad drought," said Julius Kipng'etich, the director of the Kenya Wildlife Service. "The new numbers might also reflect the increased demand for ivory and the subsequent rise in poaching."

The Tsavo National Park is Kenya's premier elephant sanctuary, hosting one third of its entire elephant population and covers 46,437 square kilometres of territory, an area bigger than Denmark and more than twice the size of Israel.

The expansive Tsavo is also the pulse on the status of Kenya's endangered elephants.

In 1976, Tsavo was home to some 35,000 elephants. In early 1970s, around 6,000 animals died during a harsh drought, and by 1988 only 5,400 remained in the park in the wake of a serious poaching onslaught.

However, the numbers have gradually grown since the early 1990s owing to tighter conservation and protection.

Conservationist Iain Douglas-Hamilton, the founder of Save the Elephants organisation said the latest figures were "hugely significant not only for Kenya but for Africa."

The wildlife authorities also raised alarm over the surge in illegal ivory trade after southern African countries of South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe were allowed a one-off stockpile sale in 2008 to Japan and China.

Kenya has in recent months arrested several people trafficking ivory through its main airport in Nairobi to Asian countries where the tusks are used in traditional medicines and ornaments.

"Whilst this census is integral to the conservation and management of elephants, the real challenge remains in protecting them from threats such as poaching and challenges brought forth by land use changes," said James Isiche of the International Fund for Animal Welfare.

The elephant to whom this foot originally belonged went on a rampage in the city, so the then-king of Bangalore shot and killed it, before turning it into furniture for Bangalore Palace.

It's strange how you can buy silk flowers or artificial flower's but I have never seen "guilt free" flower's for sale? Some will claim you can't tell the difference. Oh, yes you can. Just as you can tell the difference between pleather/leather, artificial sweetener/sugar, margarine/butter, soy milk/cow's milk, or "bloodless" fur coat/ sable fur coat. You can buy ostrich boots easily, but try to find a pair of elephant boots. Instead of looking, you might consider sting ray, where you can even chose male or female. You can raise and eat cows, goats, sheep, pigs, buffalo, deer, chickens, ducks, turkeys, rabbits etc., but you can't raise and eat a horse!!!!! It's impossible to even ship them someplace else, for someone else to eat!!!! You can put a leather saddle from a cow on a horse to ride it, but you can't put a leather saddle from a horse on a cow to ride it!!!!!!! You can wear a leather coat from a sheep's skin, but you can't wear a fur coat from a fox's pelt!!!!!! If it is legally taken, or "found", and is not an animal that has been of service to man, WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE!!!! A couple of years ago when the Kenyan President authorized the burning of millions of dollars worth of "stored" ivory, rather then selling it, the world watched and said, "you go, guy," and a couple of million starving Kenyan's watched and said, "are you shitting me?" How many American Veterans live below the poverty level? How many mothers and fathers have lost children? How many children have lost a mother or a father? Folks who gave their lives, so you could be free to be stupid and worry more about whether a dog or a lion is euthanized or has a nice place to live out his life!!!!! America's a taxing fool. Here might be a "good tax." For every dollar spent/donated to animal "rights", an equal amount has to be spent/donated to human rights. For every nitwit that want's to support an animal for life in a sanctuary, require them by law to also support a Veterans family for life. Free to make a "feel" good choice, free to make a "real" good choice. It's a no brainer, and something that Born Free, Peta, ASPCA has taught us is very affective. It is just like their methods of getting there agenda done. It is called the "carrot and the stick method." They lobby to pass their agenda into law, and endorse the government entity that does. They lobby to pass their agenda into law, and boycott the government that doesn't.
