Vijayanagara Elephant Stables Ceiling Domes

It is thought that the hooks in the ceiling domes of the individual elephant stalls, were used for chains to secure the elephants. Chaining them from the ceiling doesn't make any sense to me. I wonder if the hooks were actually to lift and hold a heavy howdah, much like a heavy draft horse harness, or possibly for hanging a light.
