Brookfield Zoo Mountain Goat??/Monkey Island 1940

Those aren't mountain goats are they, Jim? Zoological accuracy was sure not the order of the day, back in the day.

I think they always had aoudads (Barbary sheep) with the baboons until the 1970s. Forest baboons with north African mountain sheep, hey, they're both from Africa.

I love these old zoo postcards! Zoo history is a huge interest of mine.

Megan,
Welcome to my world. There is nothing I find of more interest then the history of captive animal husbandry/exhibit. Go back into the archives/manure pile of circusnospin and you will find a boat load of photographic history, plus comments from some very learned, knowledgeable individuals and historians of the zoo industry. Plus a few comments from nitwits and morons. :) The "manure pile" is linked on the right hand side of the blog.
