It is pretty obvious from these photo's how easy it was to start the "rumor" of a sacred white elephant.

Anonymous,
You moron. If you would "read", you would have noted the question marks, after "white elephant." I should have to explain what that means, but I will if you are still confused. Further down it was pointed out that myth of the "white elephant" was easy to propagate given the over pigmented elephants that were seen. Do you think the "white" is because of old age, like human hair? Geez..... The top elephant is 56 and the one below is 53.

Wade,
do you think it has something to with age?, I wonder if it als o has to someting to do with country of origine. If for example you look at the Asian elephants at Circus Krone they al have this over pigmentation, Colonel Joe is the oldest of the five with 47 years but Burma and bara are only 36 years(wich makes these two just three years older than I am) of age they also have this over pigmentation.

These are some truly magnificant bulls. Asian Ellies look prehistoric to me as well.

Bjorn,
Age plays a part, but like "sunken temples" it is often misled as age being the single factor. Area they came from, breed type etc. are other factor's besides age. The "white elephant" of old may have been purchased/advertized with the thought that the longer they had the animal the "whiter" it would get.

Megan,
Agreed. The male Asian elephant is one of the most regal, machismo, dignified, charismatic, awe inspiring, take your breath away animals to walk the earth. As for "Asian Ellies look prehistoric," in reality, that's because they are. The dome one the top of their head, which I believe in Hindu is called their Thalayeduppu, and someone please correct me if I am wrong because Hindu is a real dog for me to understand, is much cherished and coveted on a Temple Elephant.

I don't think it has anything to do with age. I think they are just scrubbed clean.

Anonymous,
I have seen a lot of scrubbed clean elephants, and it is rare to see one even close to the "color" of these. It stands to reason that the longer they are "scrubbed clean" the older they get. I believe it is due to the genetics of the animal, the area they came from. I still contend that for centuries the best were kept there, and the "Frank Buck's" of the world purchased the "culls" as that was available. Any males in captivity, now or yesterday, that are/were as impressive as these elephant's here? Seen any small, tiny eared elephants in the line up? Seen any short, fat, stubby legged elephants in the line up? Guess how many are right now being used as "herd sires" in the United States and Europe.
