A Blog designed for discussion of topics related to, but not limited to, Circus, Zoos, Animal Training, and Animal Welfare/Husbandry. Sometimes opening up the dialog is the best starting point of all. And if for nothing else when people who agree and don't agree, get together and start discussing it, it will open up a lot of peoples minds. Debate and discussion even amongst themselves opens a window where there wasn't one before.

In case you were wondering. The text reads: "The emperor at Hagenbeck's zoo in Stellingen near Hamburg". Rumor has it that emperor Wilhelm II was very fascinated by Hagenbeck's zoo and that he visited it on several occasions while he never set foot in the Berlin zoo.
Marco,
Interesting comment in regards to the emperor's apparent fondness of Hagenbeck's and apparent dislike of the Berlin Zoo. Thank you for sharing. I wonder if the reason's were politically motivated, or if there was some other underlying reason. I still contend that I think one of the most fascinating books that could ever be written on the subject of zoos and animals would be one devoted to German zoo's and the war years as well as German circus during the same time period. If researched well, and deep enough, I think you would find a number of revered institutions/people who would "smell bad."
