A Blog designed for discussion of topics related to, but not limited to, Circus, Zoos, Animal Training, and Animal Welfare/Husbandry. Sometimes opening up the dialog is the best starting point of all. And if for nothing else when people who agree and don't agree, get together and start discussing it, it will open up a lot of peoples minds. Debate and discussion even amongst themselves opens a window where there wasn't one before.

Wade: Fur Seal exhibit, just reopened as a state of the art African penguin exhibit. Seals are all gone.
Barn/shelter is one of several in the Canadian Animal domain no longer used as the monorail was scrapped these shelters were for various deer species.

The Fur Seals were African Cape Fur Seals, a specie exhibited in several European zoos. A few US zoos imported Cape Fur Seals, I think in the 1970s, but they didn't do well. Marine mammal management back then was very basic. Too bad, would have been good to have anice program with another pinniped specie.
I always get this wave of nostalgia when I see pictures of Toronto Zoo's old exhibits/residents. I grew up with the zoo and over those twenty eight years I've been there, there's been so many changes. It really is a shame that Cape Fur Seals didn't take off. Terrific species.
Megan,
I remember when the Toronto Zoo first opened to incredible acclaim as the "zoo of the future". Plagued by a vast variety of insane issues over the years, while still a great zoo, it just never lived up to it's expectations and publicity.
