Were his tusks both cracked at the location prompting the bands? Or was that an area he commonly eroded on a wall, gate, etc, necessitating their application to prevent damage?

I don't know about cracks or eroded(isn't that usually caused by wind, sand, or water) or rubbed. But that placement is normally where you would put bands, if you intended to hobble him with his head to his feet or to floor rings or a martingale or a running W.
