A Blog designed for discussion of topics related to, but not limited to, Circus, Zoos, Animal Training, and Animal Welfare/Husbandry. Sometimes opening up the dialog is the best starting point of all. And if for nothing else when people who agree and don't agree, get together and start discussing it, it will open up a lot of peoples minds. Debate and discussion even amongst themselves opens a window where there wasn't one before.

This Wegeforth Bowl at the San Diego Zoo. The trainer is probably Capt. Bennie Kirkbride. Bennie was at the Zoo from the 1940s until he retired in the early 1980s. He also did some movie work like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and other Disney movies and Ellie Mae sea lion in the cement pond on the Beverly Hillbillies. Great trainer and nice man -- one of my mentors.
Jim,
Thank you for the corrections. This one was also listed in the Thousand Oaks city archives as Jungle Land Memories. It seemed odd that they would have an obviously high line sea lion stadium, and then work the elephants out in an open area. Lou Regan mentioned Bennie Kirkbride highly on a number of occasions, and I assumed he knew him from the "Oaks". If he did movies, that may be where he and Lou connected.

Hi Jim, I would love to speak with you more about my Grandfather, Bennie Kirkbride and learn more about your experiences with him. My email is dthornton40@gmail.com. This is a longshot, but hope to hear from you.
