The Hawthorn Mellody Farm used to breed and show some of the finest saddlebreds in the United States, winning many top awards in shows as far away as Madison Square Garden. The horse above that a young John Cuneo is mounted on looks like one of those award winning saddlebreds. Note the "checkerboard" pattern combed on the horse's hip, as well as the monogrammed HM(Hawthorn Mellody) saddle pad. That's the way it used to be done in the Colonies, when show biz was a classy world. Col. Herriott or Madame Col Olds Rossi., do you recall this horse being used in the Hawthorn Horse Fantasy Review for high school, or just the two drop dead gorgeous Andalusian and Lusitano that are pictured below mounted by John and Herta Cuneo? John Cuneo looks amazingly young in this photo. God bless him, he is in his 80's today. I believe 82 or 83.

Speaking with John Cuneo recently about his shuttering of the Hawthorn Corp., he advised that his 80th birthday would occur in April. Our in-depth interview with him will run in the "Tanbark Topics" column scheduled for the January/February, 2011, issue of THE WHITE TOPS. -- Bill Hall
