The Bremerhaven Zoo is the smallest city run zoo in Germany. It originally began as the North Sea Aquarium in 1913, and was closed in 2000. It reopened in 2004 after a lengthy renovation with a new name, Sea Zoo. A special feature at the zoo is the viewing platform that allows an overview of the Weser estuary and the observation of the passing ships. 
Bremerhaven Zoo first made national new's in 2005 when two male Penguins hatched and reared a chick, when the biological parents rejected an egg that was then placed with them. Click link below:

The same thing occured at the Central Park Zoo in the United States, in 2009 with two male Chinstrap penguins, named Roy and Silo(you have way too much time on your hands, if you have time to name your penguin colony) and they reared "Tango", who was the inspiration for the absurd childrens book about his "family life."In 2005 when the Bremerhaven zoo announced plans to "test" the sexual orientations of the six penguins in their colony, who'd been seen engaging in mating rituals and trying to incubate rocks as if they were eggs, by introducing four new femal penguins into the colony in an attempt to encourage them to reproduce, gay rights advocates were outraged, and the zoo later nixed the idea, although Humboldt penguins are classified as vulnerable to extinction, so how insane was that.
Some folks suggest that politically correct whining has weakened the world, and has gotten way, way out of hand. As I am known for my sensitivity and far left ideal's, in an effort to calm the gay rights adocates so that zoo's can continue reproducing vulnerable to extinction species, I would like to suggest that the occurance with the penguins at Bremerhaven was only a fluke due to the fact that the Bremerhaven zoo is located on a DIKE on the Waser River. It may be more then just a random occurance though, and they should direct their attention to looking into that, and let the zoo's do what they do.

Dear Wade: I don't remember this post and didn't see your reply to me until now nine years later. I don't even remember leaving that comment, much less what specifically was being said about the gay penguins. There was a story in the news just recently about an albino penguin born at Gdansk Zoo. I also remember a story about two octopuses which were seen mating, and scientists were astounded by this because they belonged to completely different species and were both male. They recently discovered a new species of killer whale off the coast of South America, and a huge sunfish washed up dead on a beach of California. It as of such a rare species that only a handful of specimens have been collected, most by the same woman, from off the coast of South America, but the first specimen ever seen came from the Netherlands, and then no more were seen for maybe 200 years. Apparently this species has extended its range further north because of climate change. It's amazing how oceanic sunfish swim because they have no tails and they uses two fins to propel themselves just like sea turtles use their flippers. I have heard oceanic sunfish described as a species designed by a committee, along with giraffes. The human eye is incredibly poorly designed also.
