For Thomas--per his email request-- David Tetzlaff

Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens

Amazon.com: Living With Big Cats: The Story of Jungle Larry ...

Thomas, as I have told in the past, I got my start in the animal business with David's father, Larry "Jungle Larry" Tetzlaff and his mother, Nancy "Jungle Jane" Tetzlaff. I would estimate that at least 75% of the young animal trainers working in circus's and zoo's in the 70's and 80's, either got their start with the Tetzlaff's or had worked at the Naples Zoo.

Thomas,
At the Naples Zoo and also the park in Sandusky, Ohio. David could never go on the road, because of his responsibilities at the zoo. He wanted to badly, but his family wanted him to eventually take over the running of the zoo. It was hard for young David not to be able to come out and play in the circus with the rest of us trainers of that generation. We all have regrets, of what we did or didn't do, but in this case, David and his parents made a right choice. When I made my debut on Ringling in 1984, for the "by invitation only dress rehearsal" I invited the Tetzlaff's, Larry, Nancy, David, and his brother Tim as my guest's. Larry and Nancy were important people in my early animal training life.

Did they had two show one at Naples Zoo and one at Cedar Point or was the one for the summer and the other for the winter ?
I understand they are very important for you. For how long did you worked together with them and what did you do for them ?

Thomas

Thomas,
They had two show's or two sets of show animals, one worked at Naples, and one worked at Cedar Point in the summer. They took the exhibit/zoo animals up to Cedar Point for the summer and one set of animal acts. The brought them back to Naples in the winter, and the next summer took a different set of animal acts the next summer. The show's went year round in Naples. I first worked as a zoo keeper and later assisted with the show, dressing the chimps, sweeping of the elephants, and running the lions into the arena. I then left and joined the circus, and then went back a few years later, and presented the lions, tigers and elephant. Jungle Larry was a Herpetologist, and snakes/reptiles were his first love, but they had a large collection of lions, tigers, and leopards. He and Nancy bred and raised the first tiglons I ever saw. Two males and a female. Naples was a jungle back then, and not to populated, and a couple of nights a week Jungle Larry would take me and other students who worked at the zoo out on snake and turtle collecting trips to catch animals that he would display at the zoo, or trade to other reptile dealers for snakes that he wanted.
