This clip is taken from the 1966 movie/documentray "Rings around the world" with Don Ameche. Very interesting video that shows outstanding European acts from the late 1960's, as well as some footage from behind the scenes.
Did you see where the tiger bites the elephant as he lands on it's back.Fantastic video.Love it.

The tiger "attacking" the pad on the back is quite common actually, for some animals. It takes quite a while for them to stop doing it sometimes. Because of the surface(Hawthorn used coco mat, which was the norm back in the day) they use it like a scratching post, similar to what a domestic cat does on the carpet. You have to stop them quickly before they get in a real frenzy, and start chewing and ripping it. Note how quick Gunther "shut it down" when it started.

I have this video, I think I purchased it from the Bobby Hakes, Bobby passed away in 2008, but his wife suzette is still running the video/dvd business, they have hundreds of rare circus dvds for sale and can be contacted at bobby@hakes.org. I love the close contact Gunther has with Bengal, all the time looking extremely calm, yet confident. Trainers presenting big cats atop horses or elephants is probably what i miss most about the shows of the 70's.
