Congratulation's Radar!!!!!!!!!

Ryan Easley, made his "performing debut" yesterday on the Kelly Miller Circus with the Casey McCoy Cainan tigers. Above is a picture of "Radar" getting nutted by a baby tiger earlier this year!!!! As GGW was announced as The Lord of the Rings, I authorize Radar to have himself announced as The Panthera Tigris Putz.

Has he been given the go ahead from USDA and submitted his hours for review? I am not being a smart ass, just showing the hypocrisy of USDA policies. What committe of USDA makes these decisions.

Mr. Herriot,
His hours have not been submitted to the USDA, because he is not the Captain. I am ultimately responsible and he is working under my direction. These hours of education will be documented and filmed so as to be submitted when needed. I am not being a smart ass either, but don't take out your frustration about your grandson on this young man who has done you no harm, it is very unbecoming of a gentleman.

Wade,

Trying to write an intro for Radar. He's rejected "Titan of the Pussy Cats" so guess I will just keep trying.

Wade,
Thank you very much for this fine statement. To come from a man regarded as one of the finest in the arena, I take it very seriously (as I do working in the arena myself).
As far as getting "nutted," this picture was from last year (a few months before coming to work for Casey) and I am happy to report she was unsuccessful. Women of the world, watch out. There is a new buck in town.

Jack,
Don't use "America's Own." Jim Ragona and the GSOE used that for me from 1984 on into retirement. I think if you think along the lines of making it sound good with Putz, you will come up with something easily. Missouri's Mammal Manipulating Moron has a ring to it, but is pretty broad, and could mean a number of people. Like "Lord of the Rings" conjures up the image of GGW, if you work with Putz, it will conjure up the image of Radar.

Wade,

That "M" alliteration sequence you propose does have possibilities.

Thanks.

I have said nothing durogotory about the young man and his desires so I take issue that Casey jumps the gun and accuses me of that plus that I am frustrated over my grandson. You full of crap regarding both. You damned roght you are responsible and I would imagine that the parties running the circus would have OK d this highly unusual proposal and as an old pro would immediately come to mind liability, workmans comp..I would suggest. What is the purpose? I am all for young people learning and have over the years been very involved in teaching and encouraging. Bobby Gibbs immediately comes to mind plus young people in Baraboo and along the way. That you would be an excellent teacher would be hypothetical because it seems that in just a few very short years you have started with some cats. I have not heard of you having any major cat act on any circus.

I really do not like to have to challenge some persons opinion ex-cept when it is an untruth and causes reflection on my character. Now as to my grandson, I was pleased that you were one of a very few who voiced support at that time. I am very surprised and hurt that so many in the field that could also been supportive of this terrible injustice to this young man were so conspicous by their silence. The fact that an agency of the US government could put a person out of his chosen profession without a hearing. It smacks of events in other totalitarian societies and the people that are aware of the situation and do nothing are reprehensible. No I am not frustrated, but damned disgusted and I do not intend to let it die. So I do not intend to air out my thoughts in this case at this time, but I believe what has just happened on this KM circus leaves me with some questions. Most generally "for what reason". Also why would you, the circus and those involved allow what easily could have become a horrible situation allow this to take place already being aware of the dangers and previous happenings thru the years of handling wild animals. I doubt if you can assure me or yourself for that matter that you are content that it was not at all a dangerous issue. Over the years I have seen so many cat trainers get unintentionally involved in a very serious problem and it is not taken lightly believe me. A qick momwent in Evansville bwith old pro Wade would be one of late. As being an old pro trainer and tracher just look in the mirror. I am sure that you and it seems your missus take issue with me but I am comfortable with my thoughts and public comment.

Johnny,
Can I call you Johnny? Cause it would be hard for me to use Mr. Herriot. What is the point you ask. The POINT is to let Radar take over this act so I can train something else at home, at the point he is ready.

"That you would be an excellent teacher would be hypothetical because it seems that in just a few very short years you have started with some cats. I have not heard of you having any major cat act on any circus."
Johnny, I have owned this act since 2006 prior to that I train two cat act for Culpepper one of which is still working, during the 2004season.I worked elephants, horses, camels, zebras, and anything else that I could make a buck working prior to that. As far as what kind of a teacher I am, well time will tell I guess. I will say I would put what Radar has learned against what most of what you consider "Ol-Pros" any day. He was lucky to not get a full dose of "superstition" that I had when I started. Growing up on a circus I have heard everything from "smaller tigers are smarter" to "smear some of the new cats feces on its seat so it will think it was up there before to seat train it" to "Show the cat what you want it to do by doing it yourself, cause they learn tricks by example" all of these quotes came from what were excepted "Pros" in cat training. I was lucky enough to meet Wade and he was gracious enough to tell me a better way. I learned alot from guys I was around prior to knowing Wade, don't get me wrong, but he opened my eyes a bit on what was real and what was just "jackpotting superstition" Because of that, I have excelled with the cats that I have trained. Whether that's your opinion or not, it is fact.
In other words: I will get out my pictures any time you'd like to see them.

As far as the safety issue, OFCOURSE it is dangerous Johnny, they are tigers....LOL
But no more dangerous then anyone else who has ever worked their first show. Radar has practiced in this arena with these cats for over a year. How many guys did you see over the year who had the "luxury" of being taught how to work the act, by the guy who had been working it? Modus Operandi in the industry for the past say, 100 years, has been guy working act blows show, guy who shoveled shit longest becomes trainer, and you know that. I just read a crumby book about a guy who groomed on C&B for 3 months and was made catman just like that, even had an old pro show him how to "really gettem working good" I assured myself Radar was safe and comfortable in the arena long before I let him in there. I furthered my assurance by hanging on the door every show he has done so far. So yes my wife and I take great offense to the fact that you felt compelled to call it reckless. And if we must go that route, how many horse acts have you trained and sold to people who didn't know which end of the whip made the popping sound Johnny?? Did any of them groom for you for a year and a half before they worked the act? Did they get a free pass cause they were "born with it and for it"? If you truly look back in time, most of those considered GREAT ANIMAL TRAINERS were not born into this thing, they groomed for people, learned what they could, then added their own pieces to the puzzle. At this for many many years, and will someday make a name for himself, I wouldn't have wasted my time with him other wise. Your grandsons issue was and is quite unfortunate, and I have offered support to both he and Lance to help resolve it. I hope he gets it all worked out. But I stand by my beleif that you questioning Radars credentials comes soley from your frustration in that matter. And I think it is shameful, but that is my opinion.

Reading the comments on this blog and on Casey's blog has me wondering about something. It has been brought up that radar doesn't have enough experience to work the cats. How much experience is enough? I have know some people who have worked around animals all there lives and still know nothing about them or how to train them. I have know some people who only after a couple months have more knowledge them most people working today. According to Casey radar has trained for over a year before he worked his first show. I myself trained with my father for over 3 years before i was allowed to go in the ring with the cats. How many months/years did Jason train before he was allowed to go in the ring? I have nothing against Jason and wish him nothing but the best, but with all due respect just because you are a a 5th or 6th or 7th generation circus person or that your grandfather, or great grandfather was a tiger trainer does not automatically qualify you the work cats. I am happy for radar and wish that more young people would follow his example and get in this business because without them there will be no circus left. But as Dennis Miller always said that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Just a quick question and addition to my last coment. Just how much experience does mr. Harriott think radar needs before he should be allowed to work the cats? Also from what very little about this situation I know I think it isn't so much Jason's experience with the cats that is a major factor but the past history that the owner of the animals has with regards with the USDA and past violations. I think this is just the case of a very nice young man being caught in the middle of something he has no control over.

Agreed Adam,
I will also point out as an example, another scenario. I was very good friends with Bobby Gibbs who Johnny mentioned he "educated" I mean no disrespect but he had many guys work for him for YEARS and still not know which side of the hook you used on the elephant. I think it also depends who is trying to teach who, what. You were lucky (prolly didn't feel lucky at the time) to have your dad telling you all he did prior to starting. As you well know there are plenty of "old pros" that could have told you how to do something, but still had no clue why they were doing it. I would like to think that everything I have taught Radar has come with a "this is why this works" disclaimer followed with "alot of people do this or this which may also work but not as consistently"

Be safe Adam

Adam,
Very good son. You had the courage to state what the problem with the USDA really was about. I have kept quite through both the debates here and on the "history channel" waiting for someone to quite whining about "poor poor us circus people" and accept the history of the situation and state it for what it was/is. Young Walker was guilty by association, as I was a number of years ago when the Hawthorn elephants were moved out, no more, no less. Unfortunate but just "the nature of the beast." He got caught in the riptide, just like a California surfer. The "hours" of learning time needed and "qualifications" is at the moment, a sham and debacle. It is a brilliant idea and on the right track, but need's to be really, really fine tuned and regulated, if it is going to be of any real value to the circus animal training industry that I and Col. Herriott so love.

I love you son, and be safe,
Pops
