Looks like a very nice series. Finally something that shows the business in a human yet fantastical way that the circus should be portrayed.
In the days when Ringling did TV specials and appeared in many news stories (beyond Peta lawsuits) I think every circus benefitted from the business being in the public spotlight. It's a shame that so many shows abused the interest that was generated and more fly-by-nights and just plain crap began to bring the whole image down.
I think this series has the real potential for renewing some excitement. The circus is almost invisible today. I honestly never hear anyone in the outside world talk about circus. I think there is a hope for a renaissance.
I also hope 'Water for Elephants' doesn't portray the circus as simply a collection of disfunctional characters, because, if there is some likability in the charcters, that too might have some good effect ( I know the subject was covered well in Buckles Blog, but we can only hope that there is something positive to the portrayal).

Anonymous,
I agree about the Ringling TV specials. They were the greatest "adverting" for the industry. But possibly they gave folks the impression that everything that said "circus" was going to be of that caliber? I am sure glad folks are starting, at least a little, to address the fact that it was a lot of the "small crappy" show's that had a major hand in the downfall of this industry. Before we can hope for a resurgence, we have to hope that Big Apple, while being a nice show, is not as good as it will ever get again.
