Hunting with Cheetahs

The postcard above is one of the most common images available of a "Cheetah hunt". Although the back say's "Cheetah" it is obviously a leopard in the image. Post card manufacture's were known to take "liberties" with images on their cards, and as the lithograph from much earlier, below states: Asiatic Cheetah--Once upon a time, the Asiatic Cheetah(a different subspecies from it's African cousin) was quite common and roamed all the way from Arabia to Iran, Afghanistan and India. The Asiatic Cheetah was also known as the leopard, and were kept by Kings and Princes to hunt Gazelle, we can assume the numbnut's postcard guy imposed a "leopard" in the wagon in the photo above. Or they did use Leopards, but that seems real unlikely to me.

I don't know - photo editing was pretty unsophistlcated back then - when you see a re-touched photo it is always pretty obvious. Anyway, that sure is a huge leopard, isn't it?

Anonymous,
I don't know. I have seen some circus cage act's from this period that were "doctored". Granted it was unsophisticated, and the animals always tend to look "larger then life." Imagine the leopard coming down off a hill or a pile of rocks/tree branch, and you can visualize a wildlife scene, viewed countless times in photographs.
