Gaza zoo draws crowds with zebra-colored donkeys

Gaza City zookeepers have found a creative way of drawing crowds to their dilapidated zoo — by painting their donkeys. The Marah Land Zoo's only two zebras died of hunger earlier this year when they were neglected during the Israel-Hamas war.

The popular animals were too expensive to replace, so the keepers decided to design a pair of donkeys with black and white patterns instead.

Ahmad Barghouti says a professional painter used French-manufactured hair coloring to make the donkeys look like zebras.

Hasan Yaseen said Thursday since his three children have never seen a real zebra, they enjoy the Gaza version.

Aside from the two 'zebras,' the zoo also flaunts an aging tigress, two monkeys, and a selection of birds, rabbits and cats.

"This picture and story was sent with the question "At what point should a zoo just give up and find appropriate places for their remaining animals and just close?" I would think now, is as good of a time as any, except last year would have been better.

Bobby Gibbs had the idea first.

John,
I am not really sure Bobby had the idea first. It may be the first some folk's interested in the circus, became aware of the practice.

Slapping lipstick on a pig doesn't make it a lady. Slapping stripes on a donkey doesn't make it a zebra.
Truely, truely sad that the zoo doesn't have finances to take care of their animals.
