For Thomas--Born Free and Monaco(Monte Carlo Circus Festival)

Help stop this cruelty. From Born Free's Autumn appeal to stop elephant exploitation

We ended the keeping of elephants in London Zoo. But there are so many other captive individuals in need of our help...

At the UK’s Whipsnade Zoo in May, two baby elephants died tragically when a herpes infection led to internal bleeding. A killer virus rarely seen in the wild, but all too common in zoos. And the Great British Circus has a new act, three performing elephants. Moved from town to town, on the road for months and, as recent footage* shows, beaten.

In every case, Born Free is taking action. And this is just a snapshot of our numerous 2009 elephant campaigns. We cannot give in. We must alert the public and enlist their help. We must change legislation. We must stop captive elephant exploitation.

Baby elephant, stolen from the wild, alone and terrified. From Born Free's Autumn appeal to stop elephant exploitation.

“Keep Wildlife in the Wild” is more than just a slogan. It’s the bedrock philosophy of Born Free USA united with Animal Protection Institute and our colleagues at the UK-based Born Free Foundation. Together, the global Born Free family works tirelessly to save animals from lives of misery in tiny cages and give them lifetime care.

There are instances where rescued wildlife can be released to their natural habitats. But when this is not possible, Born Free works to place them in sanctuaries that can provide them with the freedom and natural environment they so richly deserve.

The closure of L&L Exotics is a perfect example as to why the private possession of exotic animals should be prohibited.

An incalculable number of animals across the globe languish in squalid captive conditions to “entertain” humans — in zoos, circuses, and kept as “pets.” These innocent victims endure years of physical and mental suffering. They often live in confined spaces, are fed inappropriate or insufficient diets, and are denied access to quality veterinary care. Sadly, there are many instances when urgent appeals to rescue them from their desperate plight tragically go unanswered.

However, there are important, magical instances where we succeed, and working together with animal welfare law enforcement officers we confiscate live animals from appalling captive situations. For the lucky few, a Born Free Foundation rescue means lifetime care in an appropriate sanctuary and a life worth living.

Since 2000, Born Free has successfully rescued more than twenty big cats. None of them can be released into the wild because of their dependency on humans for food, their loss of hunting skills, and the severe mental or physical damage they have suffered.

Shada, a nervous lioness, spent eight years imprisoned in an 18' x 6' circus trailer in France. She had been brutally declawed by the circus owners so that she would pose less of a threat during training and performance sessions. Sinbad, a male lion rescued in August 2007 from a Romanian zoo, was exploited as a cub for tourist photographs.

More recently, Born Free secured the relocation of two leopards, Pitou (14) and Sirius (13) from Monaco Zoo, at the request of HSH Prince Albert II. Born Free vet John Knight, helped by the Prince, administered pre-departure sedatives and carried them to their special transport crates.

Albert has promised McKenna that he will also release a camel, a hippo, and other zoo animals.

Thomas, or anybody for that matter, as there are a lot of opinions privately, why should the Prince and his partners not try to release Tsavo, as well as Princess and Diamond, along with Frankello's elephants. Is it right that they are kept in captive conditions and made to perform at the Monte Carlo Circus Festival, if the Prince and Monaco say it is wrong? Do you really think Monaco has helped the circus animal world? What about the people who go there anyway? Do they really care about the future of animals in the circus, or do they only care about what is good for them?

Wade,
I just did some research and I did not found info that Albert or Monaco is sponsoring born free. They helped with the relocation of the leopard and sponsored that action. But they are not sponsoring other actions...

Thomas,
I you can give caged animals to an organization like Born Free, because as Albert said, "they deserve to be free, and not in a cage", what does that say about your belief's in circus animals. If he has agreed that the camel, hippo, etc. should also be free, he also thinks Sonny's elephants should be free, as well as lions and rhino's. The organization that he is doing business with, say's that animals should not be in the circus. That is also is belief it would seem. If you go to a Catholic church, it is because that is your belief.

Zippos quickly discovered not to cater to Born Free when they asked them to help design 'acceptable' housing for the horses on the road. Then, after following their suggestions, they still faced pickets. Go figure.

Anonymous,
Why in the world would Zippo's have asked them for help in designing the stalls, in the first place. That is admitting to the world that they(Born Free)know what they are talking about. You sure wouldn't ask Peta to help you build an tiger cage, and then tell the world they are full of shit, when they show a video of abuse, like Born Free has recently done to the Great British Circus. You have to look honestly at the great damage Prince Albert and Monaco have done to the zoo/performing animal cause. The same damage as asking them to "show you how to do it right!!!" We whine about Spain, and their stand on performing animals, but we sure aren't sucking up to them, to have them sponsor a "circus festival." I see a bunch of folks, covering their own ass at the expense of MY and MY CHILDRENS "world of performing/captive animals". I wouldn't be surprised, in fact, I am expecting anytime soon, to hear a statement from Great British Circus to the effect, "this is nothing. You should see what that other bloke does," or "have a go at the bloody race horse people, with their broken legs and all." You can't issue statement's like, "they follow him like dogs, and he uses only a small whip to command them," and then try to explain away the tape, as you can't tell the world they are nut's, and then ask for their help.

He(Prince Albert II) is quoted: "As a little boy my favourite animal was Gory the gorilla," he said. "Sorry, Virginia, but I didn't know any better then. My father started this zoo and he loved the animals but it was a very different era. Now we know that to protect endangered species we must return them to their natural surroundings."

Captivated by Virginia’s burning commitment, Prince Albert has agreed that his other wild animals will also be freed!!!!!!

And that Anonymous and Thomas, is exactly what Born Free and the animal rights organizations wanted to hear from a country and it's ruler. You buy a ticket, you are endorsing the circus, who endorses Monaco, who endorses Born Free. You are endorsing the animal right's movement, and their philosophy, and don't think for a moment, when there is glitter in your eyes, that you are not. Don't cry when it is gone. You all gave it away.

Anonymous,
What do you think of Prince Albert's statements, and his partnering up with Born Free? How valid is he/Monaco as a captive/performing animal champion?
