Fish Feeding machine at the London Zoo 1934

This "brainstorm" was apparently 12' high and the fish was slung out the 12" window at the top, once the chain took it up. They got 3 fish for sixpense to feed the sea lions. An ice cream cone with corn to feed the deer, seems less of a bother.

In the late 1960s some animal feed company came out with a fish substitute for pinnipeds. The stuff was cut into blocks about the size of an "art-gum" eraser. It even had the color of that eraser. One advantage was it could be sold in vending machines.

Several zoos, including St. Louis, gave it a try but returned to real fish. It was probably comparable to freeze-dried camper meals. OK if you were really hungry but not a full-time replacement for the real thing.

Jim,
I remember when the Soylent Green/monkey chow/4 squares of pink carnivore "hamburger" per box, complete animal diet was all the rage. I never realized "fish" was one of those. LOL
