For Cathy--You are half right, and half wrong. There is some real junk in Europe also.

A Blog designed for discussion of topics related to, but not limited to, Circus, Zoos, Animal Training, and Animal Welfare/Husbandry. Sometimes opening up the dialog is the best starting point of all. And if for nothing else when people who agree and don't agree, get together and start discussing it, it will open up a lot of peoples minds. Debate and discussion even amongst themselves opens a window where there wasn't one before.

Thanks for the reply to my question, Mr Burck. I supose circus is no different than other things - there's good and bad. The new pictures you put up got me thinking. It must cost a fortune to buy an animal like a hippo and a good bit of training to put it in the circus. It seems it would be worth the extra effort to lose some weight and get something better to wear than a pants suit. I'd still like to see a hippo that close in a circus though even if it just opened it's mouth, or can they do other tricks too?
Cathy,
Please call me Wade. What you are seeing is about all a hippo can do. Physically they are not very athletic. Keeping them properly, and hauling them properly is very difficult. In the "old" day's of the circus they were more common because of their novelty. With new regulations on the care of animal's, it isn't worth the trouble, as now they can be seen in almost every zoo, and on almost every wildlife program on tv.
If you get hired looking like that, why should you "change your look?" There will be not one penny more, or any benefits added. Salary's in the circus have not been able to keep up with even a basic cost of living increase, and it is very difficult to get skilled artists. Many have left the profession or passed on, and because of the wage structure no new blood, or performers are going into the profession. It is one of those "dying arts."

Wade I guess you missed those
3 hind leg hippos on Soliel
and the twin hippo flame hoop
(it must have been something
that I ate that gave me that
magical dream)
Wade - is the "junk" the animals or the presenter?? LOL
Cathy - look beyond the costumes. What do the front hoofs on the little rear up pony tell you?
Steve,
I was hoping someone would pick up on the ribs of the Appaloosa/Knapstrupper's, in addition to their beat up feather's, and the matted hair on the Highlanders. A lot of things are missed because folks don't get past the performer, good or bad. I have heard poor animals referred to as "beautiful" because the presenter was, and vise versa.

to Cathy i saw a hippo in a mexican circus doing hippo rides although it only could carry small children CleanRaul
What circus is this? Who is the pant suit presenter?
Richard,
Circo di Praga is the name of the show, produced by a branch of Christiani, I believe, and the presenter could be just about anyone from a small family owned "circus".
