Arabian brood mares are a special creature. I have been keeping an eye on a particular mare, who was a week late in foaling, and as she is a first time momma, I was anticipating some "issues." At 1:30 this morning I looked out and noted 4 other pregnant mares, all gathered around and looking in the foaling shed in the pasture, so I walked out and was greeted by a beautiful black colt and an uninterested momma who would not let him nurse, and wanted nothing to do with him. After swabbing his navel with iodine, I milked the mare and managed to get 4 ounces of colostrum into the baby. Two hours later when I went to check on the colt, the momma who had not given a damn for the him a few hours earlier all of a sudden decides if I want him, she want's him twice a much, and with the aid of her 4 "nurse maids" set upon me with a kamikaze blitz. Luckily there was no one around to see, because I can imagine I looked like a high jumper doing a "Fosbury flop"(perfected by American athlete Dick Fosbury at the 1968 Summer Olympics) over the 4th rail of a 4 rail fence. Crazy desert bitches!!!!!

Wade, congratulations on the first of your new babies at your new position! Thank you so much for sharing this with all of us.
Mary Ann
I saw the headlines, "Tiger Trainer Chased From Corral By Arabian Mares".
Remind me to tell you about Trudy & the Billy Goat.
Hello Wade: I must admit that I didn't realize you were a fine arts aficionado as well! I'm impressed with your listing the Landseer painting. A real gem! Thank you!

Neil,
I love fine art, and all the years of traveling afforded me the opportunity to find some real fine pieces all over the great U S of A. I have 7 Louis Agassiz Vertebrata and Insecta drawings, and 2 John James Audubon's, a meadowlark(North Dakota State Bird) and a Gyr Falcon that I am most fond of.
Wade
Congratulations!
Bet your heart was beating. Legs work then like you were twenty. Nothing more vicious than a protective Mom of any species, animal or human. Watch your back!
Madame Col.
My legs weren't that fast when I was twenty. Damn thing let me milk her, and did nothing put go from one side of the shed to the other to avoid the baby, then a couple of hours later come's hell bent with her posse. LOL
Wade
Congratulations, Wade! Would love to have seen you flopping over the fence as that must be a classic.
Hope the new little one does fine and you establish a better relationship with the extended family so that the little one grows into full potential under your guidance.

Wade,
How the heck did you jete' over anything with skintight jeans?
Rebecca
Wade - You have to watch those first time mommas. My Appy mare let me do anything with her first colt, but grabbed my then 10-year-old son by the stomach and threw him across the foaling stall. Then she tried to take the vet's face off the next day, but still let me in to do anything I wanted. Congratulations on your first baby. Hope you post pictures soon.
Jeannie
Rebecca,
Because I have had many, many years practice, "maneuvering" in way to tight pants. The public demands it, so I have no option put to become proficient in the art.
Wade
Jeannie,
Forget babies. At the first change I have I will post a picture of the 2 year old stunning colt that place 3rd out of eleven at his first show today. Two weeks ago he had never seen a halter, and last week learned to lunge for the first time so he wasn't even conditioned for a show and still did magnificently. I didn't even have time to body clip him as he wouldn't have grown out by this weekend. I hair scraped the last of his winter coat last night at 3:00 AM, give him a quick rehearsal on some halter basic's I had schooled him on last week, and headed for the show. That beautiful black boy made me look great on his greatness alone. Now that the judges assured me of what he is I have until June to get he and a beautiful 8 month old filly conditioned right. Poor little filly has finally decided maybe a halter isn't half bad, which is good, because Monday she get's to meet Mr. Clipper's. LOL I will try to get some pictures next week, in between the interuptions of babies.
