Does anyone know what the sheepskin is for?

To keep the straps from chaffing the skin under the underarms and such during movement, I figure.

The sheepskin on the lower part of the harness was put there to cushion the nylon straps under her chin and chest, as they were irratating her skin there.
She wore this harness to give us (her keepers) a way to protect her from her Mom, who rejected her and was very rough with her in the first few months of her life. We would attach a rope to this harness and it would give us a way to control her proximity to her mom,and provide us a handle to grab Malti when she needed to be hauled out of troubles way. It worked very well and we would use this method again if we ran into the same situation.
We also had a special blanket made for her(much like a horse blanket) so we could take her outside in the cool weather.

Bud,
I realized it was to prevent chaffing, I just didn't think an elephant harness was left on long enough to chaffe. Now that Anonymous, whom I assume is from the Calgary Zoo has explained how it was used at their facility, it makes sense.
