The Graphic, also published in England, offers some great wood engravings of the zoo. It was started to compete with The Illustrated London News.

Wade, old zoo exhibits really are horrible, and we really have come so far.

Mary Ann,
This one sure wasn't bad, compared to some. They were housed like this because they felt it was what was necessary for the animals. No harm intended. If they didn't care, it would indeed be a travesty. But they learned, experimented, to reach today. And they will continue to learn, but there won't be as much experimentation given the knowledge that has been gained.
