Wade, this explanation really is odd, as I thought it had previously been established as a suicide committed by an unstable person.

I don't think it suggests anything other then suicide. Just because he "put" the bucket over his head, I suggest there may have been people who jumped off a sky scraper, who may have realize it was not as good of an idea, as it first seemed. But they can't grow wings.
