The Berlin zoo has a lot of character and is one of my favorites. Too bad that some of the newer buildings, including the elephant house, do not follow a theme and are more than plain. Berlin also has another zoo, the Berlin Tierpark in the former eastern part of town. The Tierpark is much, much larger than the zoo, giving its animals more space. Even though the entire zoo (Tierpark) is mostly constructed from plain concrete (Stalin Baroque ;-))it is worth visiting. The elephant building houses two big herds of African and Indian elephants, as well as mataees.
Another great German zoo is the Wilhelma, the Stuttgart zoo. Especially the botanic garden part in the old buildings is interesting.

Marco,
Stalin Baroque!!! That is a good one. I saw a lot of that style in Budapest.
