The only hint I will give you is to say, "he knew nothing(including anything about costumes) until I started working with him, and teaching him, but he was a pretty quick learner, didn't talk back, and eventually became one of great wild animal trainers of his day.

You got the job on me. I was going to rewrite the header and mention that in addition to costumes he also learned how to make cats sit up and pay attention.
Sadder yet, 40 years later some "trainers" animals perform that same way. LOL
You were close with Doctor. It is the Maharajah of Rewa. He came to look at our White Tigers and stayed for a summer to learn the craft so he could take it back home and impress the Shudras and the Untouchables.

Speaking of faces. You've been around lions, and seen the one posted below enough. What's his face saying? A thousand pictures and he will look the same, in the arena or in the wagon. That's consistent. Family member or not, there are a thousand places he would rather be. LOL

Yep - I've seen a few pictures of him plus Youtube and he's always the same.
Maybe the "family" chose him - he didn't choose the family?
