It can be what every you want it to be.

Pat Derby expects to get a reaction with fire extinguishers, vehicles, and noise makers. That's correct. Dr. Joyce Poole gets the same reaction from the sound of a bull in musth. Or does she get it with a sudden noise out of an inanimate object. With respect to Dr. Poole's 30 years of studying wild elephants, my 30 years of studying captive elephants can get that same reaction by sliding a door open, throwing a super ball against the walls, or running a radio controlled car through the paddock/pens. A groom was watching a video once, and the power went off. When he kicked the breakers on a half hour later and the video all of a sudden resumed, there was more ear folding and urinating then you could shake a stick at. It was a Shreck dvd if that has any bearing. I wonder why two were isolated, and the two on the other end didn't, hear it? If we assume they had an inborn knowledge of what that sound was, next time somebody says, "what the heck was that noise," just tell them, "why are you asking me, you should know?" Also for what it is worth, "my studies are expensive, but not as expensive as Dr. Pooles "or" building an elephant exhibit at a zoo. So for you folks that are not rich, and think there is nothing you can do to help, send it my way." You definatly have been to school Dr. Poole, that's called "psycological manipulation." Religious sect's use it "religiously."

Hilarious!

I have video of my dad's elephants reacting the same way over a garbage can falling over.

P.T. Barnum was right "There's a sucker born every minute" and the AR groups have made millions off of them.

Darlene,
I can accept that a wild animal, regardless of it's species, has an extensive "vocabulary" with aid in survival. But I have also seen enough changes in a captive animal to know that they lose much of their need for what was necessary in the wild. As humans have lost their acute sense of smell, hearing, eyesight, etc. It may be a small loss given 30 or 40 years removed, but it is a loss nonetheless.
I am not willing to buy into Dr. Pooles hypothesis just yet. If I have to see on what side of the fence she stands. That will affect who you "find" in your studies.

These two make me sick. it has taken her 30 years to figure that out? In 2000, Ms. Poole was invited was invited to be the keynote speaker for the EMA conference in Orlando. First she didn't show up but did it by conference call and then she said to a room full of elephant men (zoo and circus at this one) that no one in the captive elephant business is doing ANYTHING right. Nevermind all the valuable research we have with captive elephants. After she finished, Carol Buckley's boy Blais got up for his presentation and said no one knows what they are doing with elephants except them. What a start to a conference that was supposed to bridge some of the zoo/circus, free contact/protected contact fallouts. It was funny watching the conf. organizer trying to shut Poole off though.

Joey,
I don't think there will ever be a bridge. I have found zoo's open to better options for their captive charges for the most part, and willing to look and listen. It is the sanctuary folks that can see only one agenda, and it is scary because it is a private one. No animal should be in captivity, except theirs. No private owning of elephants, except them. No body does it right, except them. I at least will listen before I dismiss. They dismissed years ago.

I believe captive elephants also have an extensive vocabulary.

Exactly my point Joey.

Yes they only "see one agenda."
It's called $$$$$$$.

Darlene,
We don't want to lose sight of the fact that research is very valuable, and does take funding. She can't set up a tent/booth and charge admission after all, with tshirt and winkie blinkie light sales at intermission time. She has to find the funding. I just really question where she is seeking it at. I really smells of an agenda done in that format. It seems like Dr. Poole want's them to all be free, and is seeking verification for her beliefs, and that isn't even close to science.

I don't believe Dr Poole or any AR people are aware of the dwindling numbers of wild elephants around the globe.

I am sure her funding comes from government grants, etc.

Research is very valuable. How many trainers, zoos, circuses have been credited with what they have learned and/or taught?

My dad, for one, was very instrumental in elephant castration research. He did it for the love of the animal, not for the benefit of the next government grant or for the next donation to his favorite AR group.

How many Zoos and Circuses have been credited with the great success of new births and breeding programs? None! They are dogged and dismissed and used as propaganda by AR groups.

If their interest is for the welfare of the elephant and elephants around the globe then I believe they would share their research a little more readily. Have we heard any info on what Carol’s latest elephant had died of? Not the press release but the real info/autopsy?

They may not have set up a “tent/booth, charge admission, with tshirt and winkie blinkie lights” but they do make a pretty penny with their clever propaganda.

They only "see one agenda" and that is money. And they do it at the expense of other elephant people who love, care for, research, and spend their lives with these animals.

Do any of the millions of $$ PETA makes go to actual animal care or research? It goes to lobbyists and lawyers and dinner parties and smoozing celebrities.

The scary part is I believe in my lifetime I will see the outlawing of horse and pet ownership by these same groups. I am very shocked to see how far they have come in the past 20 years.

True AR agenda is the belief in a “Born Free” ideology but with out the realization that it can not/does not exists on this planet anymore.

Darlene,
Peta is a way out in space, on another planet group of nitwits. They don't even approve of sanctuaries.
Speaking of nitwits, as you are that passionate about it, how about the Prince of Monaco saying animals don't belong to cages, and they should be free in their ancestral lands, and donating a number of them from his zoo to a bona fide animal rights sanctuary. And the circus is still sucked up so tight to him, they can't take a deep breath. Still have their "best 0 the best" awards festival in his kingdom, with him handing out awards for animal performances!!!!! They are the ones who have done the real damage.

Yes I completely agree with you about the Prince of Monaco.
