For klsdad

I am posting this comment, as a thread because it is probably one of the most thought provoking statements that I have read on any circus blog in 4 years. It is spoken from the heart, and it took extreme courage. A statement in which someone has more to lose then to gain should be applauded for it's nobility. KLSdad has asked what hundreds have stated in private, but lack the courage to state it publicly. If more fans were this forthcoming, instead of seeing that their friend gets nominated for the "congeniality trophy", we may have a better idea, of what it is the public wants :

Wade.. Wade... (Or more politely.. Mr. Burke.. Since we haven't met I've tried to acquaint myself with your acclaimed accomplishments via the various circus sites.
BRAVO>>!!
You MIGHT (I say.. most humbly) know of me from Buckles' site.. among others...

Now listen what you've done!! (smile!)

First off... I'm an elephant lover.. (as opposed to elephant fan!) and a circus fan!! I've even had fantasies of having an elephant of my own!!

I post this here... because...

While viewing the video of this magnificent animal (Alexander?) in his natural habitat (albeit in an enclosed park.. one of the oldest!).. I suddenly started to
realize I don't think I want to picture HIM with a sequined blanket, a befeathered showgirl, or a YELLOW wig. What's happening to me??? In the 8 minutes of this video I've received as much joy as with ALL of the elephants I've seen in captivity.. zoos, circuses.. put together. What's happening to me??? HELP!!
I'm currently reading "Zoo - A History of Zoological Gardens in the West" with a wealth of history and photographs. Whole-heartedly recommend it. As you may know, it traces the collection of wild animals starting back to the first known "zoos" in ancient Egypt.

(Back to my thoughts)

Somewhere along the way, traveling menageries of unusual and "wild" beasts became fashionable and profitable in days long before TV - or streaming video from an African waterhole. As far as elephants, the domestication of Asian elephants for work and ceremonial events served as an indicator that they could be displayed, and even trained without too much trouble. Then, and I'd like to learn who, someone "persuaded" an elephant to stand on it's hind legs or another elephant's hind quarters (which I'm not sure is natural for female elephants.) Adding sequined blankets and showgirls followed.

What to do??

I'm not sure our new zoo elephant enclosures are the answer, or sanctuaries. I'm concerned, for example, that the herds at the Tennessee sanctuary will have all 2,000 acres damaged in short order. Talk about loss of habitat!!

Do you think we should concentrate in keeping elephants in these large parks and watching them via cameras instead of having children see their first live elephant with its body/head covered so she fits in with the decor of the show??

No.. I'm not jumping ship!! I have my ticket for ZZZ at the Garden Mar 26 - Opening night!!

All good regards..

klsdad

klsdad,
Don't suckup to me!!!!! I know exactly who you are. You are the guy who looked at a tiger doing the most phenomenal corbett over two tigers, conditioned to the peak of athletic power and strenght, and thought she was skinny. You are also the same guy who posted a video of an elephant getting tortured with water sprayed from a garden hose on youtube. Am I right? Am I right? LOL Of course I know who you are. Are you sure we did not meet one year at the Garden? Or at the Meadowlands? The above statement klsdad, was to illustrate how folks should not jump to any conclusion until they have balanced all the facts at their disposal, not just the facts as they want to hear them, thus becoming informed, with an open mind and no bias.
I know how you feel looking at the video of Alexander. I have felt the same way since I was a boy growing up in North Dakota, watching herds of antelope. The reality is it will only stay that way if we protect it, monitor it, and conserve it. That may require culling, or the selling of game licenses for the legal harvesting of surplus animals, so you better get used to the idea of death as a necessary evil, to keep it at least where it is at, with no further deterioration. Capturing and bringing surplus in to circus's? Absolutly not unless it is strictly for a breeding program. Into zoo's? Absolutly not, unless it is strictly for breeding, and only to facilities that have met the facility criteria. As Alexander had his place so do "captive Alexanders" if the purpose is humane, and they are beautiful with blankets as well, as in a beautiful zoo exhibit, if the humane protocol is met. The book you reference is a wonderful book, there are a great many like it which illustrate the great strides zoo have made, and are continuing to make. Are there similar books illustrating the great strides circus has made, or great strides sanctuarys have made? For the last two you have to take folks word for it, and I will advise you in advance to take that word with a grain of salt. If dog pounds, horse sactuaries, feline sanctuaries have been deemed necessary, I don't know how we can deny elephant sanctuaries. They just all need to be held to the same standard, zoo, circus, sanctuary alike. The Prince of Monaco, which holds your circus festival every year, donated his zoo animals to a sanctuary, as he didn't feel they deserved to be in a zoo or in a cage. What does that say to you, the Circus Fan of America who loves animals? Your own OABA/circus unit endorsed the same Monaco, while Ned the Elephant performed at one of the President of OABA's circus dates in Maine? What does that say to you, the Circus Fan of America who loves animals.
Elephants were originally, I think used in the circus to set up the tent's etc. before mechanics, as they had been used in the lumber industry. The performing I believe was because of "you are here, you gotta do something." Most of what you hear about "natural" is hockum. The British Circus is right now, claiming that doing a mount is a "natural positon for breeding!!!!" An animal has a natual ability to do things, but the minute they do it for any other purpose but their own, it is no longer natural. An animals body and how it is constructed is what allow's it to do what it does, not the training.
Rest assured the Elephant sanctuary will not have the 2000 acres damaged in short order. They have laid it out nicely, and I am sure they will monitor and "pasture" rotate. Any trees that are damaged, well, that's just the nature of the beast. And it is no more loss of habitat then the acreage needed for a zoo, or the acreage needed to build a barn or a winter quarters. I don't approve of sanctuaries purely on the basis of spending funds on an animal that is of no purpose, whether it be horse, cow, elephant, tiger, etc. I love animals that much. The funds spent on feeding old. beyond breeding age animals or castrated animals could be so much better spent on that conservation we spoke of earlier.
And it goes without saying that I think there is absolutly nothing wrong with the training of an animal, again as long as it is done in a humane manner with a purpose in mind, by adaquatly skilled individuals.
I thank you for the wonderful insightful comment. It may show many that maybe, we don't know what people want, and it is better to let them tell us in an open, no fear of reprisal forum.
Have a good time at the show. It may not be the Greatest Show on Earth any more, but it is still the best out there.
Wade

More recently, Born Free secured the relocation of two leopards, Pitou (14) and Sirius (13) from Monaco Zoo, at the request of HSH Prince Albert II. Born Free vet John Knight, helped by the Prince, administered pre-departure sedatives and carried them to their special transport crates.

The Born Free Foundation, the British animal charity, named after the famous film, offered to rehome Pitou and Sirius in Shamwari reserve near Port Elizabeth.

Albert promoted this as an environmental breakthrough. He said the foundation was right that wild animals should be seen in their natural surroundings.

It's amazing how two animals could do more for Albert than the priciest PR. Agency photographs of him helping to carry the tranquillised leopards from their cage were wired around the world. They said Monaco is changing.
He has been trying to rebrand the Principality and attract a younger, more eco-friendly non-dom crowd.

Virginia McKenna and her husband Bill Travers founded Born Free, the charity that rescues and rehomes animals taken from their natural environment
For 10 years, Virginia campaigned for the release of big beasts from the antiquated zoo in Monaco, set in the cliffs below the palace where Prince Rainier and Princess Grace once ruled. With cruel irony, the animals’ prison overlooked tax-exile wealth super yachts and the Monte Carlo casino. With a determination that belies her frail frame and 77 years, Virginia persuaded the new ruler, Prince Albert, to release 16-year-old brother and sister leopards Pitou and Sirius, who have only known life behind bars. In a moment, they’ll be freed from their cages into a fenced-off garden of acacia trees, where they’ll spend the rest of their days.
Captivated by Virginia’s burning commitment, Prince Albert has agreed that his other wild animals will also be freed, and plans to transform Jardin Animalier into a petting zoo, with smaller creatures for children to stroke.

With a roar, Pitou the leopard bounded off into the African bushveld Wednesday after a long flight from a Monaco zoo to her new home at an exclusive wildlife reserve.

Her brother Sirius was more reluctant and had to be coaxed to leave his cage.

The 16-year-old siblings had been handed over by Prince Albert of Monaco to the Born Free Foundation, an international wildlife charity, as part of a program to relocate exotic animals from zoos.

They had been housed at the principality's cliff-top Jardin Animalier for the last five years after being rescued from a French traveling circus.
"It was becoming increasingly difficult to justify keeping large animals here," Albert said Monday
"It is a privilege for the foundation to receive these beautiful leopards and to re-home them to their rightful place, Africa," McKenna said in a statement ahead of the relocation.

Will Travers, the chief executive of the Born Free Foundation, said it was time that ministers "came to their senses". He said: "Born Free, alongside other organizations, was ready and willing to find homes for the last 40 or so wild animals in the event of a legal prohibition on their use in circuses.

German activists, who have built up a database to monitor the movements and welfare of the animals, say Vana Mana is believed to suffer trunk paralysis. A dossier passed to The Independent claims Delhi has stiff front legs and an abscess. In 2006, the elephant had to be rescued by German firefighters after being unable to get to its feet. Two years later, rescuers were called again to pull the animal to safety after it went swimming in a lake with its German owner, Lars Holscher, a former zookeeper. Reports said Delhi had arthritis, preventing it scaling the muddy bank.

Jeff Link, communications manager with the Great British Circus, denied there were any health problems with the animals which were yesterday passed fully fit by a government-registered vet, he said. He challenged campaigners to take their allegations to the RSPCA accusing opponents of "clutching at straws".

Hello Wade... BURCK! (I apologize for the mis-spelling in my initial submission! I know better and thought I had corrected it!)
Wade.. I looked for your email address on the Web before I sent in my first posting, but couldn't find it. Please don't post this one unless you feel compelled.
I don't think blogs are for two persons talking to each other on personal matters.
My email address is klsdad@mindspring.com in case you'd like to email me.
Certainly greatly appreciate your taking the time to read and discuss my question/s and share your thoughts and knowledge. I'm always open to listen and learn, and knew I could from you.
(No.. not sucking up!! I don't have to - to anyone! Get over it! (smile!) No.. we have never met, but I must have seen you at the Garden several times.
As far as your two examples of how you know who I am you really don't understand either one. So.. listen and learn.
When I commented on the photo of a tiger doing a corbett... I thought I made it perfectly clear
that I thought the photo had been
badly worked-on, and in doing so had even erased some of the animal. Don't you think that was the case?? I felt someone was doing your work a great dis-service.
And, in the Terrifying Water Torture of Elephants... you do realize, don't you, that I took the video and I'm even commenting in the video how happy I am to be witnessing the event. (Clyde Beatty/Cole Bros. Shea Stadium - NYC- 1987. I put it up to counter-act all the over-the-top, and thankfully mostly old videos of the activists. Ben Trumble understands as he stated in his comment. You still don't think for a minute that I meant it, do you?? It is a TRAP.. and you fell in... and now to use your
mis-understanding against me?
I can take it. And.. I thank you for the additional video of elephants. Also relish reading, listening and looking at all your postings. My first zoo, being from Indiana, was the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago.. and try to visit the zoo in any city I visit, being Ft. Wayne, Pittsburgh, Bronx Zoo, Central Park Zoo, Frankfurt, San Francisco.. Just finished "Life at the Zoo - Beind the scenes with the animal doctors" and sure enjoyed it. (I particularly like the photo on the cover - a shot from behind- a man in shorts holding a young elephant by the upper tail..with each of their inside feet touching. Remarkable!!
I do not "bill" myself as a "Circus Fan" in capital letters. I joined a few years back and my issues were filled mostly with ads for the persons running for office in the association. So, that was the end of that I DO LOVE CIRCUSES THOUGH! AND ANIMALS.

I'll keep waching.. and learning!

Best regards,

klsdad

Greetings klsdad,

What is your real name by the way? I was sure we had met. Over the years, there were so many people that you met, by a quick hand shake I was not sure. Of course I knew you were kidding about the picture, and about the you tube. I take very few things serious, except animal training and animal husbandry. It "upsets" some folks that I do not take them more serious, but my respect is earned, not given as a matter of course.
Thank you for the thoughts about the blog. I was started as you may realize with 4 other people in response to Buckles censoring comments or allowing anonymous comments and writing history the way he wanted. The other folks dropped out of the blog after getting "heat" at the comments made in regards to Buckles Blog. That is why the circus is in it's current state. Too many people are afraid to speak, and that is wrong in a free society. Instead of the circus distancing themselves from the "abusers" they embraced them as heroes, and protected them. It then reflected on the whole industry, and crippled it badly. We, fans alike are all paying for it. To much self serving paper was hung, and not knowing any better many folks went along. You can't write history from a perspective of he is my friend, and he is not. Facts have to be given, and then a decision can be made. It is why my blog has become more for professionals and Buckles has become more for the fans. And the fan's are indeed wonderful, but sometimes you don't learn much cutting up jackpots.
I should hope you would not fear talking about anything on the blog, as none of the rest of us do. I have always left it as, if the shoe fit's wear it. But don't get angry at the messenger.
Kind Regards,
Wade Burck

Addendum to Klsdad,
What did you think of the Ringling show, not bad or another lame attempt?

Wade:
Seeing the Ringling show at the Garden Mar 26.. and will meet the elephants... etc. at their tunnel exit at 34th St. between 3rd and 2nd Ave a couple midnights before. It's only a block from where I live.
Always great to be standing in the crowd watching and listening to the excitement!! Quite a crowd.
See you're having a problem getting a clip up to YouTube. I'm using Windows and might be able to help. I place my .wmv file in a file on my computer. Then go to YouTube.. sign in.. and on my title page click on the UPLOAD button. On the new screen I use the "browse" button beside the blank box to look in my computer files to where my clip is stored.
When I get to it.. I hit "upload"
and up it goes. There are some places to put a name on the file as you want it to appear on YouTube.
Have you seen my video I transferred from 8mm of a 1987 performance of Ringling at the Garden? It's at:

(I'll be glad to give my name in email. Don't use it on the Internet for security reasons.)

Klsdad,
8mm in 1987!!!! Man, you make me feel old. Like my my son when, he brought me A Man From U.N.C.L.E. magazine because it was an "antique." I had to explain to him the great difference between "vintage" and "antique."
Security reasons, damn are you with the CIA?? LOL Appreciate the link to the youtube. I guess I am old enough, to say those were indeed "the good old day's."

Kslad,

Rebecca,
My father didn't think it was so "cool" when I pried the heels off of a brand new pair of Sunday go to meeting shoes with a screw driver, so I could hid bit's of paper with my assignments on them, as well as secret notes, a half inch pencil for writing said notes, and a paper clip for escaping from handcuffs.
My secret device remained secret, until the black tape gave way, my heels came off, and I tripped and threw a whole plate full of good will offerings down the aisle. What was I going to do, I was protecting the world from two evil forces, THRUSH and KAOS, and both CONTROL and the United Network Command for Law Enforcement were depending on me to pull it off, and I knew I wasn't even safe in God's house.

Adaline mentioned to me on Buckles web that it is 1987. I thought she might have been in the show.
I found the program a few minutes ago.. and (hold on to your hat).. is it 1976?
Here's the program for 1976 with Ursala, King Charles Troupe, and Michu's wedding, all of which are in the film/video. I've been trying to find out all the acts so I can list them in the video file. Here's the latest program info I've found

Klsdad,
All I know is it was not 1987. I had been with Ringling for 4 years by then, and the Polar Bears were long gone. Imagine, two years before this tape was taken, I saw my first ever circus, and thought, "boy, would I like to do something like that." LOL
